New Day Cafe: Scenes from Kazakhstan [1]

Good morning, Newdists. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to drive through Kazakhstan? No? I haven’t, either, really. But last night, I did it—on Euro Truck Simulator 2. I recently got a map add-on that adds parts of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to the game. In order to access those maps, I had to install an entirely separate Russian map add-on. Then, I hauled a trailer full of smoked eel from Reykjavík, Iceland, all the way to Kazakhstan (there’s no way that’s realistic, right?).
I don’t know what I was expecting from Kazakhstan. The only exposure I’d ever gotten to Kazakhstan was Borat, and that movie did the country dirty by making it look utterly ridiculous.

“Driving” through Kazakhstan last night, it was mostly grassland. It kind of has Nebraska vibes. Long stretches of straight road, fields and cattle everywhere. I thought I’d share some pics from my drive across the country in my trusty Scania S, since I’m sure most of you—like me—don’t really have any mental images of Kazakhstan.
Entering Kazakhstan from Russia
This vast grassland was maybe 90% of the drive
Lots of livestock wandering into the roads
Uh oh—good luck with that!
The cities all seem to have entrances like this
The road quality varied, but the grassland didn’t
Random
Nebraska vibes
Some kind of roadside market?
Soviet-looking apartment building
Not sure what this is but it stood out
There you have it. Exciting, huh? Not very, but it made for a pretty chill and relaxing drive. And it’s certainly more attractive than Borat made it look, at least!
