Protest
First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The right of petition took its rise from the modest provision made for it in chapter 61 of the Magna Carta (1215)
It was in October 1972 that we attended our first protest, The Peace March to End the Vietnam War. This was huge, the streets filled from curb to curb with marchers of all descriptions, hippies and suits, nuns and kids in strollers. After the march, while driving home, I heard on the radio “several marchers were in San Francisco”. This was a rude media awakening for me.
(Way earlier……...
The first protests against U.S. involvement in Vietnam were in 1945, when United States Merchant Marine sailors condemned the U.S. government for the use of U.S. merchant ships to transport European troops to "subjugate the native population" of Vietnam. [ 1 ] )
In the center of Santa Rosa, the expensive “upgrade” to Courthouse Square changed a tree-studded area to an austere cement acre, but I have to admit, it’s perfect for demonstrations and protests. After trump’s first inauguration the Woman’s March was held there. We sang Hallelujah with tears in our eyes. We’ve been to many since, and as the square is bounded by roads, we hear and see agreement from the community via passing autos. We also attended a protest in front of the Tesla dealer yesterday.
Today an event called Sign Your Name Ukraine We Stand With You is being held, and we’ll be there. Our Sebastopol neighbor Peter Coyote in a LTE noted that the Civil Rights marches were effective because the marchers were obviously victims. The trump/ musk regime is taking aim at protests. We need numbers, to inform, be non-threatening. and peaceable assemblies to clarify our position.
I know many of you live in rural areas, where crowds are rare. Have any of you had the opportunity to join or observe protests? Do you view them as doing any good? Would it be safe where you live?
We should have listened to Mrs. side pocket. It got worse.
