The Smerconish Poll Question on Zelensky vs Trump & Vance [1]

OK, so I’ve been following smerconish.com for a number of weeks now since it always includes a daily poll question that usually draws 30-40,000 ‘votes’ on a typical Sun-Fri basis, and up to 60,000+ on Saturdays when he has his live tv program on CNN. Likewise, his audience probably reflects a broader political spectrum than that found at either Fox News or MSNBC (let alone those of us here at DK).

Today’s question naturally dealt with the ambush of Zelensky at the White House yesterday by Trump and his obsequious toady Vance, and the results were absolutely astounding:

Who bears the most responsibility for the Oval Office argument? Donald Trump 50.27% (52,767 votes)

J.D. Vance 41.47% (43,608 votes)

Volodymyr Zelensky 4.21% (4,413 votes)

All equally 4.05% (4,262 votes)

That’s over 106,000 votes in total so far, and it’s running more than 20 to 1 against Putin’s puppets! This is even more remarkable in light of their previous polling results on Ukraine-related topics:

Feb 24 — Should the US have a stake in Ukraine's natural resources as reimbursement for wartime support?

Yes = 27.36%, No = 72.64% (37,475 votes)

Feb 19 — If war ends without Russia surrendering battlefield gains, will Putin have won?

Yes = 84.06%, No = 15.94% (33,642 votes)

Feb 13 — Is it essential for any peace agreement to include Russia surrendering all territories since 2014?

Yes = 60.33%, No = 39.67% (33,219 votes)

So while backing Ukraine to the bitter end is ‘only’ favored by a 3-2 margin, even most of those who would normally be disposed to side with Team Trump on other issues have no difficulty at all in distinguishing which side was most at fault for the acrimonious fracas at yesterday’s meeting.

For example:

Feb 10 — If the 2024 presidential election were re-run today, would the result be the same?

Yes = 51.86%, No = 48.14% (35,943 votes)

The only question I’ve seen thus far with results this lopsided was about Gaza:

Feb 5 — Should the US take over Gaza?

Yes = 5.68%, No = 94.32% (39,448 votes)

So at least even most of the hardcore MAGA voters think a Trump Tower in Gaza would be a really bad idea for the US — good to know! There have also been some interesting questions relating to deportations and tariffs:

Feb 28 — Should migrants who entered the U.S. illegally years ago but have since lived law-abiding lives and paid taxes face deportation?

Yes = 14.33%, No = 85.67% (35,550 votes)

Jan 27 — Should US use tariffs to pressure countries to accept deportation flights?

Yes = 37.33%, No = 62.67% (30,287 votes)

Feb 4 — Did the US benefit from Trump's tariff threats against Canada and Mexico?

Yes = 21.01%, No = 78.99% (34,259 votes)

It looks like a sizeable minority is perfectly willing to use the threat of tariffs to try and coerce other countries like Columbia into accepting our deportation flights, but far smaller numbers actually think they will benefit the US economically if leveled at Canada and Mexico. Likewise, it’s gratifying to see that by a 6-1 margin, we don’t seem to think that deporting long-term law-abiding residents is a very good idea either — even if they still happen to be undocumented.

And likewise, it doesn’t look like the anti-DEI and anti-Trans campaigns are generating much traction either:

Jan 31 — Was DEI a factor in the DC air crash?

Yes = 6.86%, No = 93.14% (36,001 votes)

Feb 1 — Was Trump's attempt to blame DEI for DC air crash deliberate to shift focus from confirmation hearings?

Yes = 68.86%, No = 31.14% (57,612 votes)

Jan 28 — Should transgender individuals be precluded from military service?

Yes = 21.65%, No = 78.35% (31,277 votes)

That last question is still more than a bit disturbing when you realize that more than 1/5 of the respondents think it’s perfectly OK to throw someone out of the military simply for being trans, regardless of how long they may have honorably served. I’ld be curious to see what the results might be if the question applied to gays and/or lesbians as well.

Finally, a question related to what democrats should be doing about all the Trumpian turmoil:

Feb 26 — Is James Carville correct: “it’s time for Democrats to embark on the most daring political maneuver in the history of our party: roll over and play dead"?

Yes = 57.85%, No = 42.15% (32,006 votes)
