"Judgement at Nuremberg:" A film for our times [1]

Last night, I watched the 1961 film “Judgment at Nuremberg” on TCM. Although fiction, it is based on the third round of the Nuremberg trials that tried judges who sent people to their deaths, ordered them to be sterilized, etc.

It was absolutely chilling...not just because it actually happened, and the details are horrific. It was chilling because the way in which these people justified their actions is like how the Republicans are justifying their actions now. It attacks head-on the question a lot of us have asked ourselves during our Boomer lifetime: how would I have acted in Nazi Germany?

Watching this after the [enter worst word possible] events that occurred yesterday in the Oval Office, there is no doubt that we are living in a country much like 1930’s Germany.

Assistance for people with disabilities is being cut off, which will cause them to suffer or die.

Non-white (read “Aryan”) residents of our country are being fired, demoted, or sent to concentration camps in Guantanamo and other countries.

Immigrant workers are being sent to these places, not on cargo trains, but on cargo planes, tied up in chains.

Immigrant workers — “Non-Aryan” — are being treated like criminals, even though the vast majority of them pay taxes and obey the laws of our country.

Cruelty — to immigrants, people of color, women, LGBTQ folks, the President of Ukraine — is not a bug but a fixture of their actions.

I challenge you to watch this film and not come to the same conclusion, feel the same horror that I felt last night as I watched it.

Most of all, to hear these Germans say, “Well, I didn’t know what was going on,” as an excuse for their actions, knowing that many Germans indeed did know what was going on, reminds me of today’s Republicans. They are cowering in their offices, while people are calling their offices in droves, telling them what’s going on. And they aren’t listening, they aren’t hearing. They cannot say, “I didn’t know.”

When will they be judged?

******************************

As a point of information, the cast includes Spencer Tracy, Maximilian Schell (who won the Oscar for “Best Actor” for this film), Judy Garland, Burt Lancaster, William Shatner, Marlene Dietrich, and others you’ll recognize. Powerful cast.
