WELCOME TO THE EVENING SHADE A SANCTUARY OF SANITY AFTER A LONG HARD DAY OF FIGHTING FACISM YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS (Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE) AND EVEN MORE CRITTERS
THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS EVERY PERSON WHO COMMENTS WILL GET A CRITTER RULES IN THE DIARY WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY ===
Welcome to the Shade!
Something that I accidentally found recently may be of help to someone else: While navigating comments, often I just want to get to the first or last comment. It’s a pain to scroll through, especially with the “Load more” crap going on.
You can just hit the ‘1’ key to go to the first comment and ‘2’ to go to the last. No fighting the “Load more” if you do it this way.
You can find all of the Navigation keys just above the first comment. Click on the “Show all hotkeys...” link.
Hmmm… ‘J’ and ‘K’ for Next Unread and Prev Unread. What I was hoping to find was a way to get to a comment I started writing, but didn’t finish and want to finish editing. Perhaps ‘S’ for Submit or ‘P’ for Edit/Preview will take me to it.
From the North Dakota Monitor . “ Jury selection begins in civil trial brought by Dakota Access Pipeline developer against Greenpeace ”
A behemoth defamation lawsuit brought by the developer of the Dakota Access Pipeline against Greenpeace began its trial in a Mandan courtroom on Monday. Energy Transfer, a Texas-based oil and gas company, accuses Greenpeace of using underhanded means to back demonstrations against the pipeline in 2016 and 2017. South-central North Dakota was the center of a roughly seven-month protest against the project. Thousands camped near the pipeline crossing on Lake Oahe in support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, which asserts that the pipeline is a violation of its sovereignty, poses a contamination threat to its water supply and has disrupted sacred cultural sites. Greenpeace was one of many activist groups supporting the effort at the time. Energy Transfer says Greenpeace used tactics including defamation, vandalism and harassment in an attempt to tarnish the company’s reputation and sink the project. Attorney Trey Cox of Gibson Dunn, the law firm representing Energy Transfer in the case, told the courtroom on Monday the energy company seeks a little under $300 million from Greenpeace. ✂️
South Dakota Searchlight . “ Lawmakers approve rollback of South Dakota’s uniquely severe drug ingestion penalties ”
The future of South Dakota’s drug ingestion law — often described as the most severe in the nation — is in the hands of Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden. The House of Representatives voted 37-33 on Thursday at the Capitol in Pierre to pass a bill that would, with Rhoden’s signature, reduce the use of controlled substances from a felony to a misdemeanor for the first two offenses. The state is the only one in the nation with a law that allows a failed drug test for a felony-level narcotic to serve as the basis for a prison sentence. Marijuana ingestion is always a misdemeanor. Under Senate Bill 83, all other forms of ingestion would become a misdemeanor until the third offense. A Rhoden spokeswoman told South Dakota Searchlight that he will consider the bill “once it reaches his desk.” The governor previously signaled a willingness to consider alternative approaches to criminal justice. ✂️
For Mrs. RobbyK, from Daily Montanan . “ Montana House tables ‘abortion travel’ bill that would have criminalized medical travel ”
Just four months ago, Montanans overwhelmingly supported a state constitutional amendment that enshrined the right to an abortion in Montana’s foundational document. Even though voters seemed to decisively settle the issue, that has not stopped some lawmakers from proposing more restrictions on the medical procedure. It did not stop the Montana House Judiciary Committee from overwhelmingly tabling a bill to prohibit some pregnant women from traveling for an abortion on Thursday, by a 16-to-4 margin, after emotional testimony on Tuesday and concerns ranging from domestic violence to criminalizing doctors and violating the federal Constitution’s right to travel. House Bill 609 would have made it a criminal act a criminal act for Montanans to travel out of state for an abortion without a doctor’s recommendation, if the fetus was “viable.” Kerri Seekins-Crowe, R-Billings, who is sponsoring the measure tried to reassure fellow lawmakers that her bill was tailored narrowly so that it only would be applicable if the pregnancy was beyond 24 weeks, often considered the point of fetal viability, and only if a doctor didn’t determine abortion was medically necessary. ✂️
WyoFile. “ PETA claims free speech victory in Wyoming’s cattle country ”
The animal rights group PETA claimed a free speech victory Thursday, saying it reached a settlement in a lawsuit against the Rock Springs airport, which had refused to let it advertise a message criticizing leather luggage. In the heart of Wyoming’s cattle and rodeo country, where cowboys ride leather saddles, cowgirls wear leather boots and most everybody else has leather gloves, airport officials blocked People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals from buying advertising urging fliers not to travel with leather luggage. The airport will pay PETA $35,000 in legal fees and allow it to advertise as it does others, the animal rights group said. “PETA is celebrating this victory for the First Amendment and for cows who don’t want to be tormented and killed for their skins,” Asher Smith, PETA Foundation’s director of litigation, said in a statement. ✂️

Idaho got its own diary this morning. Please rec, tip and comment.

I am amazed at all of the amazing work that these small news organizations are doing! I really have to thank News from the States for much of what I found. I’d link directly to their articles, but we have differing editorial opinions as to what I want to highlight. Your opinions might be different, too. I encourage you to visit News from the States and any of the news organizations I’ve highlighted. Even in rural, sparsely populated states, there are interesting articles and commentaries being published and are free to visit.
I got rushed at the end. Sorry.
x Alexander Vindman: Lindsey Graham is an absolute coward. Trump didn’t sound strong—he was attacking an ally when he didn’t need to. All Zelenskyy said was that Trump couldn’t trust Putin. And JD Vance—he looked like an absolute clown. I don’t understand why Trump let Vance blow up his deal.

Today is…
“ Tomorrow is National Fruit Compote Day and National Peanut Butter Lovers Day. Also, kraigo, it's National Minnesota Day. In case you need some inspiration.” — Nanny Ogg
National Minnesota Day. To me that’s “days that end in ‘y’”.
You beat me to Peanut Butter Lover’s Day. Ages ago my lovely ex had a conversation with someone who said that peanuts are the thing that you should be Most Sure to buy organic . Peanuts have many industrial uses, so they aren’t bound to FDA rules. I wish I had a picture of the machine at my local food co-op that grinds organic peanuts and poops peanut butter. I usually have a peanut butter english muffin for breakfast, so it holds a near and dear place in my heart.
Peanut butter is not good for cats. I just saved you a bit over four minutes of video.
International Women of Color Day
World Compliment Day
Note to dudes: “That outfit really compliments you” is not the same as “Those jeans make your ass look fantastic”. Glad to help.
This Shade is awful!!!
I think I’ve failed you. I need to find a better balance. Idaho took all of my time today. I want to highlight less highlighted areas of the country, but I want a better distribution. I rushed through the end. At the very least, you’re getting transparency for all of your dKos money. I’m confident that I’ll hit my stride.
I don’t have time to try again. I blame Idaho . I think that rural America is under reported, but I don’t want to be as focused on it. Please bear with me while I find my balance.
It makes me appreciate the other diarists that make it seem effortless. And yet another plea for people to fill in for Nanny when she goes traveling. This kind of crappy diary is what you can expect if you don’t step up.
F’n Idaho...
The Shade is open. Have at it.
