I gathered some of Freddie’s loose skin between my thumb and middle finger and lifted it the way the vet taught me. Freddie gave a little unhappy whine. “It’s keeping you alive,” I said, working quickly and carefully to give him his insulin. I gave the injection site a quick rub then leaned back and put the cap back on the syringe. I’ve never been accused of having good hand — eye coordination, but six months of twice daily shots had made me an expert so I got the cap on without sticking myself. I dropped the used syringe in the sharps container and reached for the treat bag.
“Taking too long,” Freddie complained.
“I’m sorry,” I said, fishing out two treats.
“I need the treats,” he said, looking over his shoulder at me.
“I know,” I said, leaning forward again to set the treats on the blanket over my right leg. He quickly gobbled them up then sniffed around for more.
“That’s all there is,” I said. “You’re diabetic.”
He sighed. “I know.”
A gentle reminder of how we do things: 🐱🐶🐦 Do not troll the diary. If you hate pootie diaries, leave now. No harm, no foul.
Please do share pics of your fur kids! If you have health/behavior issues with your pets, feel free to bring it to the community.
Pooties are cats; Woozles are dogs. Birds... are birds! Peeps are people.
Whatever happens in the outer blog STAYS in the outer blog. If you’re having “issues” with another Kossack, keep it “out there.” This is a place to relax and play; please treat it accordingly. There are some pics we never post: snakes, creepy crawlies, any and all photos that depict or encourage human cruelty toward animals. These are considered “out of bounds” and will not be tolerated. If we alert you to it, please remember that we do have phobic peeps who react strongly to them. If you keep posting banned pics...well then...the Tigress will have to take matters in hand. Or, paw.
“What are you going to do today?” I asked.
“The lizards are back!” he said, perking up in his spot on my lap.
“I’ve seen them!” I said. “You’re going to watch them?”
“If they come close to the door I will. Yesterday one sat right outside the door for hours! I watched and watched and he didn’t make a single move without me seeing!”
“What a good boy you are,” I said.
“Yep!”
I stroked his fur and thought about warning him. I decided honesty was best.
“This is false Spring,” I said. “It’s going to get cold again and it’s going to rain.”
He gasped.
"I think you must be wrong,” he told me, reasonably. “Can’t you feel how warm it is?”
I shifted a little, hot and uncomfortable with the furry blanket and a furry kitty both draped across my lap. It was too hot for the blanket, but he loved lying on it and I have a hard time denying him. “Yeah, I can feel it.”
"It’s been warm for a few days. I don’t think this will ever end.”
“Do you hear that?” I asked him, pointing to the wind chimes hanging near the back door.
“Sure,” he said.
“That’s wind. That’s what’s making it warm. But it’s still Winter. In a few days, it’s going to rain.”
He looked at me for a minute, then laid his head down on one paw. Closing his eyes, he said, “I don’t believe you.”
"Freddie,” I murmured, giving him a gentle shake. “I have to get up and get ready for work.”
He stretched his arms out in front of him, and rested his head between them. This was one of his favorite sleeping positions and the way he stretched out when he was ready for serious sleep.
“No,” I said. “I’m sweating and I’m going to be late for work.”
He sat up and looked at me. “You’re sweating because it’s Spring.”
I sighed.
He followed me into my bedroom and watched as I chose my clothing for the day. I tossed my clothes on the bed and sat down, still working up the will to start my day.
Freddie walked over and put himself between my arm and my body, beginning to purr as I reached under him to rub his belly.
I had slept with the fan on the night before and the air blowing on me now felt good. “That air feels good,” I said.
“Because winter is over,” Freddie said, his purrs growing louder.
“I just don’t want you to be disappointed when this storm arrives and it gets cold again,” I said, continuing our conversation as I dried off from my shower.
"Human, you saw the lizards. They wouldn’t come out if it was going to get cold again. They’re cold blooded. It’s ridiculous.”
“They don’t predict the weather,” I said, rolling my eyes. “But the weather app on my phone does and it says rain and cold. Besides, it’s barely March. It’s not time for real heat.”
He bent down to groom the fur on his belly. I dropped the towel in the hamper and got dressed.
Freddie paused his bath and looked up at me as I put on my jewelry. “The days are getting longer,” he observed.
“Yes, they have been since just before Christmas.”
“So there! Spring!”
I smiled at him. “You’re a sweet boy,” I said.
I quickly put my hair up, then looked over at him. “I have to go,” I said. “You be a good boy and watch those lizards. I’ll be home before you know it.”
He opened his mouth to respond, then snapped it closed again, his head whipping around to look at the window. The blinds were closed, but we both heard it. The telltale sound of dozens of wings beating as large birds flew over the house and the distinctive call that identified the species.
QUACK QUACK QUACK!
Freddie lowered his body to the mattress. “Ducks,” he breathed. His eyes met mine. “But it’s not Spring yet!”
Happy Caturday, Peeps! I hope it’s warmed up a little where you are. It certainly has here. Temporarily, anyway.
