The weather was absolutely gorgeous today. It reached 55 degrees. I noticed that leaves and grass are already starting to turn that deep green. The 10-day says that the next two days will have a high in the 30’s but after that...40s and 50s with more 50s than 40s.

Crossing my fingers that with the exception of a few bumps of cold temps on the road, spring is here. I know, I know...this is Chicago (Detroit isn’t much different, after all!) but...crossing my fingers.

I’m still not paying as much attention to the news as I should; I mean I do write for a political website, after all. I guess that I read and watch more news nowadays than the average person but half the time, it’s because I have to as opposed to actually being interested in what’s going on. I mean, I am interested in what’s going on but I’m also interested in maintaining what sanity I have.

Since the subtitle of these Friday scribblings were inspired, in large part, by Joan Didion, I do have an opinion about the publication of the journal notes from the time she spent with a psychiatrist.

..Didion began writing her own journal about her sessions with a psychiatrist. She addressed these notes – detailing her struggles with alcoholism, anxiety, guilt and depression, a sometimes fraught relationship with her adopted daughter Quintana and reflections on her childhood and legacy – to her husband, John Gregory Dunne. The announcement that these post-psychiatry notes, discovered by Didion’s literary executors in an unlabelled folder shortly after she died in 2021, are to be published in April has raised questions around the ethics of posthumous publishing. Didion left no instructions to her trustees – her literary editor Lynn Nesbit, and two of her longtime editors, Shelley Wanger and Sharon DeLano – about how to handle the deeply private journal after her death from complications of Parkinson’s disease. In total, 46 entries were found – printed out and placed in chronological order – in a portable filing cabinet next to her desk. They will be published in their entirety, with only minimal editing, such as footnotes and corrections of typos, under the title Notes to John.

I think that I would be OK with this publication in 20 years or maybe even ten years but not right now. Granted, IIRC, Didion published at least one essay that was culled frothier therapy notes. As long as she supervised that publication, fine.

However, she left no direction, although I suspect that Didion understood that they would probably be published someday

I had some similar issues with the posthumous publication of David Foster Wallace’s unfinished novel, The Pale King, so I am still thinking about this. Generally I don’t like but at least in both Didion’s and Wallace’s case, it was their longtime editors that did the editing work. But still…

On of the podcasts about Modern Stoicism that I like to listen to, this notorious incident was brought up…

Remember, Argentina went on to win the 1986 World Cup. Instant replay, anyone?

Diego Maradona was an interesting guy. His death is still under investigation, I believe.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
