Helping Ukrainians speak English - Can you spare some time and caring? [1]

I feel bad about publishing this diary: I’m asking for help from people some of whose lives have been, or are being, turned upside down. Some are losing jobs, or they or their loved ones are suffering from cuts in government services.

Most Daily Kos readers and contributors live in the USA, as do most volunteers with ENGinprogram.

As I wrote recently (Helping Ukrainians speak English - a Milestone, a Couple of Requests, and a Poll), ENGinprogram has reached thousands of Ukrainians already. From it’s launch in March 2020, the organization has served 28,000 Ukrainians, with the help and dedication of 25,000 volunteers.

In spite of these impressive numbers, there are constantly more “students” asking to join than there are volunteers to work with them.

If you can, please sign up as a volunteer. It’s a rewarding and fulfilling way to spend an hour each week, knowing that you are helping to prepare Ukrainian people, government agencies, and businesses for further integration into the European community.

Volunteers range from high school students to university professors, from retired folks to the more-than-fully employed to stay-at-home parents.

Edit: As Dan K points out, the conversations are by video chat.

Almost everyone who reads DK and who is fluent in English is a suitable candidate.

While officially ENGinprogram accepts volunteers aged 13+, the current minimum age is 18. (See the TEMPORARY CHANGES note near the bottom of the volunteers page: https://www.enginprogram.org/volunteer )

Can you — will you — help a Ukrainian improve their spoken English? Please?
