The Guardian: Republicans terrified of crossing Trump due to physical threats, Democrat says

Nothing we haven’t kinda-known was going on, of course, but it’s really good to see this brought out in the open. If you look at politics through the pure “horse race” prism favored by our useless mainstream political media, there’s quite a riddle. Why would Repubs, even in marginal seats, stick with Trump on policies that seem to be horribly unpopular? Is it only the threat of primaries?

And we know it’s not. I despise those cowards but it’s OK to acknowledge: putting one’s family in harm’s way for political principle is genuinely a tough thing to do. In this administration you can’t have faith that the FBI or federal law enforcement will keep you safe.

We all think we’d be courageous in the hypothetical. I think their best course of action would be to send their family on a long “vacation” to Canada, hire a ton of private security, and go public when the threats reach a certain volume or intensity.

Meanwhile I’m brainstorming about how to combat this.

Fight violence with violence? God have mercy on us, I hope it doesn’t come to civil war. In that case we’ve lost the republic anyway.

Fight violence with passive resistance? Right-thinking people across the political spectrum could start filling the streets around the homes of “brave” Repubs who finally break with Trump. You wanna mess with the Congressman? First you gotta get through us.

Not really realistic but maybe a valid starting point for more viable ideas.

Fight violence with knowledge? Even this awful media would have to give some play to a sitting Congressional rep doing a press conference about physical threats, right? Always remember it’s not the racist-tolerant 20% of the voters deciding elections, nor the “Eventually Trump” Republicans who sigh, remind us Trump was always their least favorite nominee, and then reliably vote for him anyway — they might make up 25% more. On the margins I can see this info breaking through. But Eric Swalwell talking in a webinar isn’t going to be enough.
