Some Encouragement [1]

I have not written about politics in a while because I am too angry to confine my statements to things people want to hear, and most people prefer to avoid things that make them angry. I do not blame them. Anger is a negative emotion that often causes us to use intemperate language and take destructive actions. On the other hand, anger can be a beneficial motivator if the actions it inspires are reasonable as I believe was the case when people recently confronted their Republican Congress members. I know many of you saw Rachel Madow showing such confrontations, and I am pleased to say that one of those confrontations happened at a town hall meeting conducted by Jay Obernolte, the congressman for my district who regularly works against the interests of most of his constituents yet still gets reelected.

The meeting of the Democratic club to which a belong was on the same night as the show in which Rachel played the clip from Obernolte’s meeting, and I was till laughing as I pulled into the parking lot of our meeting place. It had been two months since we last met, and this was the first meeting since all our officers retired and new officers were installed. I arrived early. I was surprised to see so many cars in the parking lot. Most of our members show up later. I was even more surprised when I entered the building. The number of people I did not know actually exceeded the number of people I knew. Ten minutes elapsed before the old guard, including our former officers, arrived. It was good to see those friends again. As much as I appreciate all the new members, the relationships I have formed with other members of our club over the years are important to me. I was glad to see that resignation from offices did not mean resignation from the club.

Once the mandatory business, such as the adoption of the minutes of the last meeting, were completed, we were split into two groups – the action group or committee and the media group or committee. It soon became obvious that it is not just the leadership of our club that is changing. We are also changing how we define our purpose, promote our causes, and organize our participation in demonstrations and such. Old people like me often have a difficult time with such changes, but there is a sort of revitalization or charge of energy to our club that we really need in such difficult times. Fortunately, no one is expecting me or the other members close to my age to keep up with the newer and younger members. We contribute what we can as we can, and we are highly motivated to do so.

I did not leave soon after adjournment; instead, I lingered to chat with our new members. I soon recognized a fair number of them as people who had stopped by our voter registration booth at the farmer’s market. Almost all of them told me that the threat Trump poses to our country made them realize they have to get more involved. Although those new members did not say it directly, it is becoming obvious that people are beginning to realize that we must throw the groveling and spineless Republicans, like Olbernolte, out office and impeach and convict Trump before he and the rabid South African Musk-rat succeed in turning our government into their personal criminal enterprise. And that is not just angry hyperbole, it is what they are trying to do!

It is obviously going to take a massive and relentless effort on our part to remove the dire threat Trump poses to our democracy and security, but I am encouraged by the people who now recognize the threat and are determined to thwart it.
