So we adopted a dog about 3 weeks ago, a really sweet pup of maybe a year old. Since we live on Long Island, the shore has always been a big part of our lives. All the dogs we’ve had have always gone with us to all the beaches available to us.

We brought Petey to one of our local beaches, just west of the Blue Point fishing pier, and we were surprised at the number of dead birds, mostly ducks and gulls. Luckily we saw them first and kept the dog away from the dead bodies.

Today, we’ve seen multiple reports on local TV stations about the large number of dead birds along this area, and they say it’s avian flu.

This is a really concerning development. I’m thinking this summer we may be staying away from the shore, one of the best parts of living here.

And if it becomes transmittable from human to human, we’re in a lot of trouble.
