This can’t be good for the quickly sinking Trump economy. The CBC reports that Canadian snowbirds are selling their Arizona homes in record numbers, turned off by Trump’s growing authoritarianism and fed up with his constant bullying and belittling of Canada.
One of those Canadians getting the hell out of the USA is Dale Botting, a Saskatchewan resident who has been coming to Arizona to escape the cold Canadian winters for the past 45 years — living in a house in Chandler, AZ that was originally purchased by his father in 1980. The house is currently on the market.
Botting said he could have dealt with the weak Canadian dollar and has resisted the urge to cash in on his home's appreciated value over the years, but he could no longer live in Donald Trump's America. "It's this Trump regime and this cultism," Botting told The 306 host Peter Mills from his Arizona home office. … "As an ethical investor, I just don't like what I'm seeing. I don't like to invest in governments that are becoming more authoritarian and more imperialistic and we certainly see that."
Laurie Lavine, a realtor in Phoenix, AZ, says that in his 27 years working in real estate he’s never seen such a large number of Canadians selling their Arizona homes at the same time as he’s seeing right now. His fellow AZ realtors are seeing the same thing.
Although the weak Canadian dollar and potential tariffs are playing a role in the big Canadian real estate sell-off, Lavine says the biggest reason is that Canadians are “fed up with Trump.”
"The bullying is kind of the last straw that broke the camel's back, and seven out of my 10 listings are for that reason alone."
There are so many Canadians trying to sell their AZ homes right now that one accountant who specializes in helping Canadians navigate the tax implications of selling U.S. property is so busy that he can't see new clients for two weeks, when normally Lavine could get a client to see him in a day or two.
Lavine said most people he speaks with are puzzled by Trump's threats against Canada, and some worry the threats of tariffs or annexation are just the start of what Trump could do. "My clients are fearful that in addition to tariffs they might decide to put an extra tax on a non-resident owning a property down here so many have decided to cash out," he said. "They've just had enough."
We know the feeling Canada!
