Apologies for this brief diary, but I’m busier than usual these days.
One of the things taking my time has been moving my retirement assets out of stocks and into less volatile investments. As of today, I am almost entirely out of the stock market.
Why? The noise around the coming (and possibly quite deep) economic recession is getting louder by the day. I’m well aware that people say trying to time the market is dangerous, but if I can simply protect the principal we now have against a downturn, I’ll be thrilled. If I end up missing an upturn, I can live with that.
Thankfully my wife and I are in a good financial place. We’re far from rich, but we’re okay — as long as Social Security keeps paying, that is.
But that’s not the main reason we’re abandoning equities.
I see it as a political statement. I’ve heard that Trump’s ego fluctuates with market performance. And anything I can do to cut him down a peg, I’m going to try to do.
The good news is, you can do it too. If you’re invested in stocks, sell. And if you don’t have to buy something, don’t. Tomorrow is Buy Nothing Day, and I won’t.
But I’ll say it again — If you’re invested in stocks, sell. If enough of us sell, the market will go down a bit; possibly even more than it already has in the past few days. Selling in the market is often contagious. If the market goes down more, it will then go down further. Panic may set it in. Panic in the markets is also contagious.
And the truth is I feel bad, because people are likely to get hurt when the markets go down. But trusted experts are saying that’s an inevitable result of Trump’s chaos anyway. So I think it makes sense to get out ahead of the market if you can. And maybe get the downturn going a little sooner at the same time.
