Today is a sad day in DC as employees from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) were finally allowed back to their offices to retrieve their personal items from their offices. They were given fifteen minute time slots, but were forced to bring their own boxes and tape. Several groups did show up to bring them boxes and tape to assist in this very depressing task. There were some people there showing their support for the employees and USAID.
Given this gut wrenching display, I think it is a good time to remember that people died performing the mission of USAID. People were serving this country in war zones and dangerous locations for the American people. They did so without guns or uniforms. USAID didn’t serve in the “nice places.” The USAID mission was to go where things were difficult to bring some humanity to the world and show that the American people cared.
The picture at the top of this diary is of the Memorial Wall at the Ronald Reagan Building in DC. At the moment, it is unclear if the memorial still exists. Here is the list of those brave Americans and local staff that were killed in the line of service for Americans and people around the world that needed help and hope.
