Tell Their Story [1]

We've all seen the headlines: 47 and muskrat taunting federal employees who are losing their jobs, the Virginia Governor pointing fired employees to Walmart jobs, MO GOP rep Mark Alford suggesting ‘God has a plan’ for them, Joni Ernst suggesting they are all lazy and overpaid, and it goes on and on. And it’s obscene and disgusting. And these people claim to care about their constituents ? And worse — claim to be Christians??
My guess is we all know someone who has worked for the federal government in some capacity. I do. They risked their lives for over 30 years to protect land resources in fire prevention and natural emergencies. They were underpaid, undervalued and could have made 3x more if they’d moved to a state agency or private sector.
The majority of federal employees believe in the mission of the agency they work for and the people they serve. They’ve survived multiple RIFs and shutdowns and still they come, ready to do the hard work of serving the American people. Are there some who don’t? Sure — same as any organization. But that is the minority, not the majority.
Here’s what I yearn to see — on a daily basis: Our democratic leaders telling these stories. About the jobs they do, the people they serve, their education and skills, their contributions, the sacrifices their families make — whether its through lower wages, long hours, or even weeks/months at a time away from home.
We need to own this story and not let the Rs continue to push a false narrative.
That’s my rant for the day….
