MAGA Caller Demands Answers From Me About The Census Bureau And Whether I Work Remotely. [1]

As a U.S. Census Bureau employee who works the phones, you can imagine that I receive more than my fair share of anti-government types. And I have develeped a thicker skin because of those folks because I try not to take it personally, even when the caller is very insulting. Today, however, a had a self identified and PROUD MAGA supporter on the line, and the MAGA caller had questions — no strike that — DEMANDS on whether the survey the caller received was legal and why should he/she answer the survey. I also had to listen to a diatribe against Democrats and Nancy Pelosi. While I tried to be calm and explain what the American Community Survey was all about, the caller demanded to know in a loud voice, “ARE YOU IN THE OFFICE OR AT HOME?” And it was at this point that the sneering, smug, bigoted, ignorant, and stupid caller wanted to inflict pain on someone like me.

The caller’s voice was on loud and clear for me from the get go. Basically, the caller didn’t want to answer any of the instrusive questions from the American Community Survey (ACS). Normally, I’m empathetic to those who receive this long and mandatory survey. But these questions have been around for decades on the Decennial Census. The Census Bureau dropped most of the questions and placed them on the ACS because the information obtained became obsolete too quickly between the ten year windows of the Decennial Census.

However, MAGA caller was on a tear, and the caller didn’t want to listen to me explain anything to be honest. And that is not hyperbole. I’ll give it to you all in bullet points.

According to MAGA caller, he/she has never had to fill out questions like this before. EVER. MAGA caller is a senior citizen (from info screamed at me over the phone), and MAGA caller has conveniently FORGOTTEN that the Census Bureau asked all these types of questions in the 20th Century on during Decennial Census..

Once again, conveniently forgetting about little things like TAXES. Because of those first two items, MAGA caller doesn’t believe that the ACS is LEGAL!

MAGA caller believes that somehow the government is targeting MAGA supporters, and MAGA caller will contact President Trump via Truth Social to ask him if this is legitimate!

I try to explain to MAGA caller that the Census Bureau was given the duty to collect economic data from President Eisenhower and the Congress back in teh 1950’s, MAGA caller cuts me and yells, “I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE LAW!” Not hyperbole. Exactly what MAGA caller said.

I try to explain that MAGA caller can go to the U.S. Census Bureau website for information that the ACS is legitimate, and once again, MAGA caller cuts me off with a shout of, “I DON’T TRUST ANYONE FROM THE GOVERNMENT EXCEPT PRESIDENT TRUMP.”

THIS IS WHERE TIRADE AGAINST NANCY PELOSI AND DEMOCRATS BEGINS.

According to MAGA caller, Nancy Pelosi has made her millions off the back of people like MAGA caller, and MAGA caller is sick of that! MAGA caller is through giving money to millionaire Democrats (Cognitive Dissonance Meter is off the scale now). No, I never said a word about Trump being a so called billionaire, along with Musk.

I do point out that the ACS was done under the first Trump Administration, but MAGA caller ignores me.

Finally, MAGA caller makes another demand. MAGA caller shouts, “ARE YOU AT THE OFFICE OR AT HOME?”

And it’s at this point I know this is going to get a hell of a lot worse and more personal.

I didn't think that asshole MAGA caller had the right to know where the fuck I was at that time, so I merely asked in a calm voice, “What difference does it make if I am in the office or at home? I’m using the phone for work, so does it matter where I answer the phone from?” Seems it makes a huge difference to MAGA caller.

“EVERYONE SHOULD BE IN THE OFFICE WORKING!”, MAGA caller shouts. MAGA caller’s voice is dripping with derision about remote workers, which I am one. MAGA caller goes off on back in the day he/she brought in a baby to work!

No, I don’t believe MAGA caller for one nanosecond on that score.

As I have explained to the readers of Daily Kos, I am the primary caregiver for my 96 year old Mom who has dementia. Remote work gives me the ability to work and take care of her. It’s a stressful situation for me, and the last fucking thing I need is some sneering POS telling me that I don’t work because I am at home!

But MAGA caller wants to report me to Musk to get shitcanned because I’m some kind of mooch working from home. I must be made to suffer directly because I’m a federal employee. I didn’t lose my cool, but it was at this point that MAGA caller got feed up with me and stated again to report this to her orange god on Truth Social.

Afterwards, I did write up what had occured (sanitized version) for my supervisore to give her a head’s up about MAGA caller.

NOTE: My older sister sent me information from DOGE that states that the U.S. Census Bureau only needs to count people and nothing else. It specifically cites that the ACS is overreach, and all other economic data surveys can be done by private, local, or state governments. I suspected that DOGE had already come to a conclusion about what the Census can do “efficiently” from the other federal worker purges, but it was confirmed by my sister.
