WELCOME TO THE EVENING SHADE A SANCTUARY OF SANITY AFTER A LONG HARD DAY OF FIGHTING FACISM YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS (Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE) AND EVEN MORE CRITTERS
THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS EVERY PERSON WHO COMMENTS WILL GET A CRITTER RULES IN THE DIARY WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY ===
Ugghh! I’d saved everything, but my system blew up in a bad way and it all magically disappeared in the reboot. I don’t think it would be possible for the two to correlate, seeing as a saved diary lives in Koslandia and a local system can’t do that. I really don’t think it was user error, but it’s the only thing that makes sense. The only other thing I can think of that makes sense likely didn’t happen so I’ll go with user error on my part.
Potluck!!!
OK, I’m over reacting. Yesterday’s work gave me an idea of what I’m doing and it wasn’t stellar anyway. I had cued up Taylor Swift’s You Need to Calm Down because she gives me hope for “those damned kids”, but I’m in a much more uptempo mood than that.

via ABC News . A week ago today...
BELCOURT, N.D. -- Native American activist Leonard Peltier was defiant toward the government but grateful for his supporters as they welcomed him home to North Dakota on Wednesday, a day after his release from a Florida prison where he had been serving a life sentence in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents. Peltier, 80, grew emotional as he addressed about 500 people who gathered at the festive event that included food, a drum circle and dancers at a center in Belcourt. The small town is just south of the Canadian border on the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians' reservation. “I’m so proud of the showing and support you’ve given me," Peltier said. "I’ve got a hard time keeping myself from crying. A strong warrior can’t be up crying in front of his people.” ✂️
I really wanted to cite the North Dakota Monitor on this one, but they didn’t have a story on it, which sucked. When they say “The small town is just south of the Canadian border”, they’ve acclimated to the Scandinavian gift of understatement. Actually, Belcourt (Wikipedia) is a bigger town than I anticipated.

Washington Monthly, Trump’s Historically Bad First Month of Polls Should Terrify Republicans .
President Donald Trump’s net job approval average, in both the Real Clear Politics and FiveThirtyEight averages, has slid about 7 points over the first month of his second term, leaving his approval rating just barely above his disapproval. This is a historically bad beginning for a presidency. The only worse example is Donald Trump’s first presidency. Who cares about poll numbers anymore, you might ask. Congressional Republicans should. They are on the ballot next year, and the GOP could easily lose control of the House. If Trump does not defy political gravity, he could drag them down, as he did in his first term. Presidential polling honeymoons always end, but rarely so fast. ✂️

Minnesota Reformer . Minnesota Republicans ask Minnesota Republicans to spare Medicaid
Medicaid advocates hoping to stave off billions in cuts to the program for low-income and disabled Minnesotans have found an unlikely ally: Republican lawmakers. “Drastic reductions to Medicaid funding have the potential to impact the 1.4 million people we serve and place incredible pressure on our overall state budget,” Sen. Jim Abeler, R.-Anoka, and 13 other Minnesota GOP lawmakers wrote in a letter to the Republican members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation, President Donald Trump, and the acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. “There are no other sources to make up the lost federal share beyond severely impacting the seniors and those with disabilities who we serve,” the letter continues. “This is contrary to how we Republicans respect the aged and the vulnerable.” ✂️

More Minnesota Reformer . Minnesota Democrats propose path to unionize for Uber and Lyft drivers
Less than a year after the Minnesota Legislature passed a sweeping bill raising wages for Uber and Lyft drivers, two Democrats announced plans to create a path for drivers to unionize. Because they’re treated like independent contractors and not employees, Uber and Lyft drivers aren’t able to unionize under the federal labor law. “Right now, labor law claims that these drivers don’t have the right to form a union like most workers, denying them the best path forward to fix the industry,” said Sen. Zaynab Mohamed, DFL-Minneapolis, during a Tuesday news conference with drivers and leaders from the Service Employees International Union. “The best way to hold these companies accountable is to give drivers a seat at the table.” The bill is modeled off a law in Massachusetts, which became the first state to allow drivers on apps like Uber and Lyft to unionize through a ballot initiative passed by voters last November. ✂️

MinnPost . St. Paul officials respond to White House callout over lack of ICE cooperation
St. Paul was at the top of a Trump administration statement on Tuesday accusing sanctuary cities of letting “killers and rapists roam the streets.” It’s a claim that St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter was quick to debunk. The memo from the White House outlined three cases where it says ICE detained people allegedly convicted of criminal sexual conduct. The letter linked back to stories about Mayor Melvin Carter, Attorney General Keith Ellison and St. Paul City Council Vice President Hwa Jeong Kim remaining steadfast in their support of city policies that prevent the city from taking part in ICE enforcement. ✂️
I could just stay in the north country for this whole diary, but not all of us live here, so I’ll look elsewhere.

Worst deal ever!
Other than the Trump brokered “deal” where Ukraine gives everything to Russia and iDJT’s folks couldn’t name a single concession from Russia.

Do you have to be Canadian to sign this petition?
via The Beeb . Thousands of Canadians sign petition to revoke Musk's citizenship
Hundreds of thousands of people have signed a petition to revoke Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship amid tensions between the Trump administration and Canada. The petition, which opened to signatures five days ago, accuses Mr Musk of acting against Canada's national interest and undermining its sovereignty. In Canada, citizenship can be revoked only if someone has committed fraud, misrepresented themselves or knowingly hid information on an immigration or citizenship application. Mr Musk, who was born in South Africa, holds both Canadian and US citizenship. Responding to the petition, the billionaire wrote on X: "Canada is not a real country." The post was later deleted. ✂️

I’m planning on picking up Saturdays to give Nanny real weekends without Shading or herding. Since this Saturday is the 1st of March, I’m planning on starting then. I’m going to look for more local sources for news across the country, so we can get a feel for what’s going on at a local level outside of our own localities (hopefully without paywalls). Any suggestions for that would be gratefully accepted!!!
Today is…
National Pistachio Day
What do you mean “That’s not what they meant”?
Black Lives Matter Day
International Tongue Twister Contest Day
The Shades are open! Have at it.
