In a remarkable turnaround, the Liberal Party of Canada has jumped to a two point lead over the Conservatives in the latest poll from Ipsos: www.ipsos.com/…
This marks the first time the Tories have been in second place since 2021. Just six weeks ago the Liberals had a 26-point deficit. Justin Trudeau’s decision to finally step down as leader and prime minister, plus the threats of tariffs and annexation from Trump and his minions, have produced a sea-change, just as the four remaining Liberal leadership candidates are holding their English-language debate: www.richmond-news.com/..
The Conservatives, under leader Pierre Poilievre, appeared to be cruising to victory in the next federal election, which is expected be held this year. Poilievre had been echoing Trumpian rhetoric for years, and has been side-swiped by reality as Trump has regained power. It also appears that Trudeau, who had definitely outstayed his welcome, was the main cause of Liberal unpopularity.
Personally, I’m not thrilled by these numbers. As a life-long New Democrat it’s hard to see my Party’s numbers sag to 12%. Mark Carney, who will likely win the Liberal leadership, is yet another person with no experience of electoral politics stepping into high office. But given what Poilievre and his gang stand for, the Liberals are at least an acceptable option.
