It looks like Musk and DOGE’s blitzkrieg on American governance is slowing down, due to public outrage, court victories and lawmakers (Democrats, and even a few Republicans) standing up. But with Trump having promised to ignore court verdicts, it’s unclear still how much they’ll affect matters.
It seems to me we’re looking at the first American triumvirate. Trump is a flatulent Caesar. Vance is Pompey (who was older than Caesar, while Vance sees himself as the heir apparent), and of course Musk is moneybags Crassus. Things went badly for Pompey and Crassus before very long, and ultimately for Caesar too. But their goal was to capture Roman government and society, and that they did. The Republic was ready to be an empire. DOGE is merely the opening campaign.
Last weekend Trump posted a cryptic and terrifying statement, that blue states will disappear from the map, and that there is a big surprise coming ahead of next year’s midterm election. He’s not referring to anything like the many legislative attempts to split California into several smaller (including a few red) states–those campaigns take years and have always failed. And New York and Massachusetts aren’t about to go that route.
I’m convinced this has more to do with use of the military, and his growing paramilitary. Hitler had his Storm Troopers, his off-the-books domestic enforcers. The core of such a force already exists in the Proud Boys, Three Percenters and other such terrorist organizations. They’ve been frighteningly quiet since Trump pardoned them. They won’t stay quiet forever.
In addition, in a recent purge of the Pentagon, Trump removed four-star Air Force General CQ Brown as Chief of Staff and put in place an unqualified loyalist (like his entire cabinet, including the alcoholic Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense). He’s done the same to many of the Pentagon’s top lawyers, and replaced professionals who swore oaths of loyalty to the Constitution with less capable people loyal to him. The only reason for him to do this is to commit crimes.
Not small crimes. Major, state-altering crimes.
Trump is on record as wanting to send the military into cities like New York. It’s not hard to imagine an expanded list: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston. Or perhaps he might simply aim to decapitate the states.
Cultivate peace, and love in your life. And gather your resolve. We’re all going to need every bit we can muster. Dark times are coming.
