A thought on Trump's lies [1]

Alrighty, a thought for the day. And quite timely. Or well, really, it has been timely for the last 10 or so years.
"A lie is as good as the truth if you can get someone to believe it."
I wish this quote were mine, but it's not. My late husband, Gene, used to say this about Donald Trump, but long before Trump came on the scene he'd pull it out as an opening to discuss anything that was a lie. It was one of the ways he approached facts and history with his students at The University of Maryland as well.
He got this succinct quote from a fellow football player at Michigan State when he and this guy were buddies. It seemed that everyone on the team knew that Jack lied, and that he was very good at it, but he had the sense of self to laugh about it and explain that he knew he was lying and wanted to see if anyone was paying attention.
So, one night when Gene and Jack were in their cups, Gene asked what I think is the essential question, the one that went to the heart of the matter. Why exactly do you lie?
And Jack's answer was the above quote: “A lie is as good as the truth if you can get someone to believe it.”
