The fourth year of the war has begun.

This didn’t age well.

x Three years ago, Russian propagandists wrote:

“The Ukroreich regime will fall very soon.

The tactical encirclement of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa and Kherson is being completed.

The losses of the Russian army on the scale of such an operation are minimal.”

A Russian author offers an explanation for Russian behavior towards the war.

Instead of waging a genocidal war to “heal and awaken” their country, Russians should have overthrown the autocratic government and seized the stolen assets of oligarchs and cronies.

x 1/ The third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a time for mourning, Russian nationalists say – not because of the destruction and huge loss of life, but because the war has failed to 'heal and awaken Russia' from its "thirty-year bad dream" since the USSR fell. ⬇️

2/ The Russian pro-war 'Soldier's Truth' Telegram channel suggests that the war's anniversary allows a reappraisal of the 33-year-old project of the post-Soviet 'New Russia'. The author writes: 3/ "The Special Military Operation has convincingly shown that "New Russia" turned out to be a weak likeness, a pale shadow of historical Russia – either the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. 4/ "And therefore, forecasts for the further "development" of this "New Russia" are exclusively negative, and the future today seems gray and sad. Why did the SMO show this? 5/ "People born in the 50-80s of the last century were brought up on the example of the Great Patriotic War [World War II]. Or, if you like, on the myth of that war. The Great Patriotic War was a large part of the culture that we absorbed and that can no longer be “pushed out”. 6/ "We played at war, where the “enemies” were always the Fritzes, and “ours” were the Soviet soldiers. We wanted to fight like them, and, if necessary, die like them, in that war. 7/ "We read books and watched films about the war, many of us still cannot calmly hear German speech – it evokes strong negative emotions. But we did not fight, we are only children and grandchildren of those who survived the war, but ... still. 8/ "And then the SMO began – in a different country, but still in ours. And most of the older generations (from which the overwhelming majority of the “leaders” came) perceived it as THAT war. 9/ "Moreover, similar words were spoken, and the actions of the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic were also very similar to those of the Fritzes. We were waiting for something similar to THAT war.

Burn, baby, burn.

x Ukrainian drones hit Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery for the 3rd time in 2025, a key facility processing 17.1M tons of oil annually. It produces fuel vital for Russia’s military. Fires erupted after the strike

If the anti-tank mine didn’t get them, the drone surely did.

A Chechen commander died, reportedly from drug addiction.

Russians, however, claimed he died from a lack of sleep. Or maybe it was a heart attack.

x ☠️ Yesterday, the commander of the 2nd MSB of the 4th Brigade of the Armed Forces and the special forces "Akhmat" Zelimkhan Batukayev, call sign Shustry, died. 🔥 It is reported that the cause of his sudden death was his drug addiction.

This tally estimates Russian deaths at 160k to 165k, not counting those from Luhansk and Donetsk or foreign mercs.

The clearest takeaway from the last three years of fighting is that Russia’s losses have steadily increased each year. In the first three months of the full-scale war, Russian forces were losing an estimated 40 to 60 soldiers per day. By the same period last year, daily losses had risen to 250. However, these mounting casualties had little visible impact on the battlefield map. In total, Russia has lost nearly twice as many soldiers each year as the year before: 2022: Approximately 20,000 Russian soldiers were killed

Approximately 20,000 Russian soldiers were killed 2023: Another 47,000 to 53,000 Russian soldiers died

Another 47,000 to 53,000 Russian soldiers died 2024: The estimated death toll was nearly an additional 100,000

Another 1,050 Russians brings the three-year running total to more than 868k dead and wounded.

I find it amusing that Russia actually has a human rights commissioner.

Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova said an agreement had been reached to evacuate residents of Russia’s Kursk region who are currently in the Ukrainian city of Sumy, reported RIA Novosti. “There are individuals [residents of the Kursk region] who are already in Sumy. And there is an agreement with the Red Cross and the Ukrainian side that they will be evacuated through Belarus to Russia,” Moskalkova said. She did not provide further details, including how many people from the Kursk region remain in Sumy. The exact number of residents evacuated to Ukraine after Ukrainian forces entered the region is unknown. The Washington Post previously reported that about 100 people were in the Sumy region, most of whom left Russia after a strike on a former boarding school in the town of Sudzha, Kursk region.

Gosh, I wonder who didn’t show up.

Did anyone tell Zelenskyy that if you want Trump to read something, you have to use a lot of pictures and make sure not to use big words.

The US shamefully voted no, along with Russia, Nicaragua, Niger, Sudan, Eritrea, Hungary, Haiti, Equatorial Guinea, Belarus, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Israel, North Korea and the Central African Republic.

The company you keep.

x The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by Ukraine and European countries. It designates Russia as an aggressor state and demands the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine's internationally recognized borders. The United States and several other countries voted against it.

Merz is Germany’s new chancellor.

Europe still has a long way to go.

x EU is spending more money on Russian fossil fuels than on financial aid to Ukraine, - The Guardian EU bought €21.9bn of Russian oil and gas in the third year of the war, despite the efforts under way to kick the continent’s addiction to the fuels that fund Putin’s war chest.

Trump agrees to shut down US military base in Greece at Putin and Erdogan’s request.

The decision marked a shift in U.S. military strategy in the region and raised concerns among Greek officials. The base in Alexandroupoli has been a key logistical hub for U.S. and NATO operations in southeastern Europe. Its presence had been a point of contention, particularly with Turkey, which has long opposed U.S. military operations in the region. According to Greek media, Trump’s decision to dismantle the military presence in Alexandroupoli came after a joint request from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As noted by the Greek newspaper, if confirmed, the move represents a diplomatic concession that could alter the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Greek press reports highlight that the closure is seen as a strategic loss for Greece, which has strengthened military ties with the U.S. in recent years. The Alexandroupoli base played a role in regional security and military logistics, particularly in supporting NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe.

Another human sacrifice.
