Did you hear the news?

Alicia Menéndez, a woman of Cuban descent, will now co-host a Prime Time news show on a leading cable network.

60 million people in the US (about 20%) will now be represented in Prime Time on a non-Spanish speaking network. 60 million people who represent the electoral path forward to liberals will not only be represented by someone of shared descent but someone who has spent the last number of years covering issues important to those people who will elect the next Congress and next President.

Alicia Menéndez’s program American Voices covered many stories in my community. She did not focus primarily on immigration, she focused on issues that impacted us Latinx-naturalized citizens of US. She has been in voter outreach to the Latinx community. Let’s face the facts: the Democratic party seeded Latinx issues, notably immigration, to the Trump noise machine. When Democrats refuse to stand up to phony facts spewed by the conservative universe, we feel left out. Many people told me they saw little different between the two parties. At least with open hate, we know what the Republican party is. But Democratic indifference and systemic inaction to injustices, lies and institutional change impact our daily lives as well. Menéndez’s work has given our voices a national platform. Liberals just aren’t listen. From the lack of acknowledgement of Menéndez’s new role right here, it is openly obvious what value liberals and the Democratic party has for Latinx voters and 60 million people. We are much more than your custodians, farm workers, construction workers and mechanics. (Not that liberals cared about the wages and unsafe conditions that both US citizens and non-citizens toil in all over this country.

Menéndez’s work does not focus solely Latinx issues.

Latinx voices want to be part of the conversation. We want our identity recognized and valued, rather than treated as voting bloc that is pandered to at every election cycle. We are not a community focusing solely on immigration — as many have learned, a large part of my community (Mexicans and people from other Latin American countries) are torn on the issue. We care about gun violence — an issue totally ignored in the 2024 election. We care about health care, the environment, education and all of the same issues all US families care about. We care about our community — even beyond our heritage — because we want to raise our families here too.

New Voices do not extinguish the Last Voice

Symone Sanders-Thompson and Michael Steele will be part of the prime time program with Menéndez. After watching The Weekend program that they have been co-hosting, I see value in the blended viewpoints that will be presented. Menéndez calls it a “heart of service.” In my 30 years here in San Diego county, we hear many voices raising up our communities. At a national level, we need them too: we need more Asian voices too! We need more Black voices! We also need more LGBTQIA+ voices! We need indigenous voices! We need young voices! We need Indian voices! We need Muslim voices! Listen to the communities — be a witness.

Every voice matters in the resistance to Trumpism. I hope that Joy Reid’s voice is not silenced. And I hope that her supporters can embrace these changes.

Thank you for reading,

Alejandro Morales
