Does MSNBC have a "Black Female Host" problem? Or with ANY non-white anchor? [1]

Greetings all!

I just finished watching the last ReidOut tonight. It was her usual well-researched, entertaining, and occasional “loosy-goosy” self (usually toward the end of the show). Like many of us, I looked forward to her show when I could watch it. While I am not a student of program ratings, I knew MSNBC was in a slump and needed to “right the ship”, but I was unprepared for the news I learned YESTERDAY about her impending cancellation...and even less so for tonight being the final show. She will be missed...but that leads me to a question that’s been bugging me for years.

Does MSNBC have a problem with Black female hosts? She is not the first one who appeared to be popular, especially among Black viewers, who was cancelled by the network. First there was Melissa Harris-Perry who hosted a weekend morning show from 2012-2016. Towards the end of her tenure she went “on strike” at the network because she felt management was silencing her on topics she felt were important to her and her community. Her show ended that same year.

Next to leave was Tiffany Cross, also held that same timeslot (after Joy Reid was moved from AM Joy to The ReidOut). She presented takes on “Hot Button” topics that made management very uncomfortable. She also was outspoken about her opinions away from the set, such as her Comedy Central appearance likening Florida to a “male appendage” and what you might do to said appendage. Google it. This may have led to her termination. She was there from 2020-2022.

Tonight we lost Joy Reid. Her sendoff show included appearance by Rachel Maddow, Laurence O’Donnell and Nicole Wallace. She also gave shoutouts to her staff (in TV, it really DOES take a village...). It was part of a “restructuring” to try to “win back viewers”. If this is what management thinks will work...they really do have their heads up their...backsides.

BUT WAIT...THERE’S MORE!

As I write this, The Daily Beast announces that Jonathan Capehart (Saturday/Sunday show), Ayman Mohyeldin (Sunday nights) and Katie Phang (Sunday afternoon) have also been cancelled. It’s unknown if Rev. Al Sharpton (weekends) will be kept. The Weekend hosts will be moved to weeknights as well as Jen Pasaki. Ali Velshi will be expanded an hour.

In other news...Morning Joe is still on the schedule. Sigh.

I feel safe in saying we are probably watching the downward spiral of MSNBC. We need an alternative...yesterday.

Any suggestions?
