Many years ago Rus and Karinne lived in adjacent houses. As time went by, they grew fond of each other and wed. The marriage was mutually agreeable off and on, but Rus became abusive. The violence continued for years rising and falling, but never ceasing. When Karinne attained the wherewithal to survive on her own, she sought and obtained a divorce.
Rus sulked quietly for a few years, but grew increasingly jealous of Karinne’s success and all her new friends. He started trash talking her around town. Once in a fit of spite, he even tore down her fence and built a shed in her backyard. One day, he just walked into her house and refused to leave. He moved his own stuff into some of her rooms, and sold all her possessions he could get his hands on. When she tried to remove him, he punched her over and over again. Every day he abused her, continuing for three straight years now.
Karinne knew she could not have survived the ordeal without help. Neighbors and friends like Brit, Francois, Nora, Paul, and Jerry and a lot of others were instrumental in helping protect Karinne from her abuser.
Chief among them was Sam. He helped coordinate the assistance, gave a lot on his own, encouraged others to do likewise, and even succeeded in helping the neighborhood shun Rus to express their collective disapproval.
Then one day, something weird happened. Sam started defending Rus. He called Karinne a b*tch in public. The whole fight was all her fault, he proclaimed, saying she drove Rus to hit her. He and Rus even met at the local bistro to discuss how to make Karinne back down and how they could split up property. As part of this scheme, Sam made Karinne an offer, “I’ll go back to helping you if you give Rus one fifth of your property and me half of the rest.”
It is too soon to tell exactly how this sad tale will end, but two things are clear by now.
First, the neighborhood is beginning to think Sam is almost as big a jackwagon as Rus.
Second, Karinne will not give in to this bully.
●She has bravely persisted this long.
●She will persevere through the greatest of adversity.
●She is an inspiration to us all.
