Should you get another measles vaccine?. It depends when you were born and when you got your original, but overall, it can't hurt, and if you are near an outbreak, it might save you serious grief.
Last update on measles in Texas was 90 with 16 hospitalized, 9 in New Mexico, 3 or more related cases (the definition of “outbreak”) in New Jersey and Georgia, and cases in New York (1), Rhode Island (1), and Alaska (2). The CDC only updates monthly.
The CDC finally released the report that appeared briefly a couple weeks ago, on two indoor-only cats in Michigan who appear to have been exposed to bird flu by symptomatic dairy workers in May 2024. The cats, from different households, were seriously ill with the B3.13 strain of H5N1, which is the primary one circulating in dairy cattle. The farm workers had symptoms before the cats did, but refused testing. Others in the first household tested negative. The second worker lived alone. Both worked in a county that has had positive tests in cattle but on farms that had not tested positive. [or at all? inquiring minds want to know, especially because the workers refused testing. Would they have lost their jobs if they brought the health authorities to the dairy?]
Ohio is being badly hit by the virus in their poultry farms, 54 commercial flocks in the last 30 days.
Nevada has suspended its requirement of cage-free rearing for commercial eggs, and allowed the sale of grade B eggs (perfectly safe but may be misshapen or have smaller yolks). Retailers can source eggs from any producer that meets food safety standards.
New York is reopening live poultry markets with mandatory testing for all birds.
Can avian flu spread via wind? This study sure can't rule it out, though the distances were relatively short.
Afghanistan and Pakistan have each reported wild poliovirus cases, while Algeria and Guinea reported vaccine-derived cases, there were also positive environmental samples in Gaza.
Mpox risk is rising in DR Congo because violent unrest has caused patients under treatment to flee the clinics. Humans are so broken sometimes. Congo conflict And with USAID money frozen, many areas have nothing with which to combat or contain the virus.
