The leopards are coming! Politico sees signs that GOP congressmen are starting to panic.

“I thought we were supposed to be in a new era of meritocracy. Not the indiscriminate firing of people,” said one Republican congressional aide granted anonymity to speak candidly. Republican lawmakers are growing particularly uneasy with cuts impacting veterans, who are given preference in the federal hiring process and have been disproportionately affected by the dismissals. The fears of Republican lawmakers in rural districts go deeper, though. They’re also worried about the long-term fallout of Trump’s moves as the federal government struggles to hire the next generation of federal employees who will keep farm and public health programs running across rural America. Vulnerable GOP incumbents on Capitol Hill are also wary that Musk is turning his ire toward Medicare and Medicaid. (Politico)

Huffpost adds

Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, West Virginia and Arkansas are all among the 10 states with the largest shares of Medicaid recipients. (Huffpost)

Look who thinks leopards are eating the wrong faces!

x Jim Jordan on firing of federal workers: "Maybe there have been some mistakes made, but I think the intensity and the focus on getting rid of the wasteful spending -- the one guy who can unlock people who somehow get locked in a restroom in a national park? This is ridiculous."

That budget from the Senate: Here there be leopards! But it only takes three Republicans to turn them away. Hakeem Jeffries is on it.

x Jeffries: "This budget is a betrayal of working-class Americans... We only need 3 House Republicans -- there are 215 Democrats in the House - we only need 3 to stand up on behalf of their constituents, and that is going to be an ongoing effort over these next few days, to identify those individuals"

But we’re not out of the woods yet. For every fire put out another one pops up.

Trump sued CBS bigly on suspicion that they selectively edited a Kamala Harris interview on “60 Minutes,” trying to make her look better than him. That’s old news. But now CBS is fighting back.

“Defendants believe discovery is needed into President Trump’s personal financials, as well as the financials of Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign organizations and of Trump Media & Technology Group, including with respect to Truth Social and the $TRUMP meme crypto project,” wrote CBS lawyers. (LawandCrime.com)

Can you imagine what not just any lawyers, but CBS “60 Minutes” lawyers, could do with the financial data Trump promised and never delivered, plus his campaign numbers and also his crypto and Truth Social businesses? Whee!

x "It's almost impossible to believe he exists.

It's as if you took everything that was bad about America, scraped it off the floor, put it in an old hot dog skin & taught it to make noises with its mouth" #PRESIDEMENTIA

x Tough luck, American hosers, a deal has been struck. But you weren't invited to the negotiations. If given the states of Vermont, Maine, and Minnesota, Canada may be willing to grant a temporary ceasefire to the hostilities.

Sunday Science

Even the science journals are focused on political news.

Biological Sex is Not as Simple as Male and Female

About 1.7 percent of the population is intersex and don’t fit neatly into male and female boxes, according to InterAct, an advocacy organization for intersex youth. That’s as common as having naturally red hair. Intersex people may have any of a wide variety of sex development differences including Turner syndrome, androgen insensitivity, Klinefelter syndrome and others. Some may be born with both ovarian and testicular tissue, and thus might be classified as both male and female under the terms of the executive order, says Sylvan Fraser Anthony, InterAct’s legal and policy director. Some people want to burn it all down. Why?

Chaos seekers seem to be driven by ego. They feel like they’re not being respected as much as they feel they should. But need for chaos is not a personality trait, where in every single context people are going to seek chaos. Instead, it’s something that psychologists call a character adaptation. These adaptations help people respond to a particular context. White men as a demographic show the strongest correlation between status loss and need for chaos. This fits with our theory. It’s the personal status loss that motivates people. White men [more often] care that they individually are losing out. (Science News)

Know any white guy with a big ego who fears a loss of status, such as perhaps not getting the inaugural crowd size that others got?

How to cope with news that’s “flooding the zone.”

Away from the podium and inside the Oval Office, it’s a strategy that harkens back to a predigital Soviet practice of producing huge amounts of disinformation meant to make people question reality. See the bigger picture. To make the task of processing the Trump administration’s relentless flood of actions a little less daunting, Young recommends considering them within the larger narrative of the president’s goals and priorities. Limit news consumption. Stay with science. “Science is the most democratic procedure that humans have invented.” Reach for something good. Connect with ourselves and other people. Take action. PSA: Are you in a red state? Here’s an easy way to make a difference. Look up your congressmen, if you haven’t already, and strike fear into their hearts simply by calling to ask for a town hall meeting.

It’s National Tile Day! (Tile Day? Who thinks these things up, anyway?)

x YouTube Video

And National Dog Biscuit Day! Raise your hand if you tasted dog biscuits when you were a kid. (I can say with some authority that hamster treats taste better.)

And it’s National Banana Bread Day!
