“The Twilight Zone” was a great show, and “It’s a Good Life” is one of it’s most famous episodes. Little Anthony (6yo I think) was born with a “supernatural power” to make real anything he’d wish or will. He’d easily become very angry, and if he did not get his way you could find yourself sent to a hole in the ground out in a field. Even speaking badly about Anthony or not being sweet to him could seal your fate.
So, you see my point — Drumpf displays the attitude of Anthony, and believes he has that kind of power, does he not? And what do we do about it?
In the “Twilight Zone” episode the adults see Anthony’s power and stand around frightened into submission, very aware they must cater to his every wish.
Drumpf doesn’t wish people out into a hole in the ground, though he would if he could. Instead he just “removes” them from the government or from their jobs. If he wants he just removes an entire free nation from the ability to defend itself vs Putin. He fires whoever he wants to, without showing real cause (so far). He disables or attempts to destroy government agencies that provide medical care or eductional needs. Does so with a flick of his pen.
Major problems:
1) Drumpf got into the oval office (again) because MAGAS and other stupids wanted him there. So there’s no way to “vote him out.” Don’t make me laugh talking about impeachment.
2) The ReThugs stand around like walking dead, terrified that if they displease him they will find themselves tossed out into a wasteland. Most Democrats (so far) schlep around asking for money and crying “We don’t got no leverage!” The leverage is in their mouths and actions, but they haven’t faced the music on that yet. See, Drumpf doesn’t have a “supernatural power” like little Anthony, but he can write executive order wish lists like Anthony, confident that everyone, including the SCOTUS will defer to his wishes.
3) Know what fractals look like? There are growing numbers of people around Drumpf who either signed on gladly in the first place or became appointed by him, who are of the same ilk and gladly will do his wishes, no matter how many other people they have to “wish away” or maybe kill. So the “power” keeps growing, like metastatic cancer I’d say.
4) The BIG problem is what do we do about it? In stories and legends and TV dramas someone figures out — OH! what we have to show the poor child is that he’s been hurting and needs LOVE, needs to be cuddled and nurtured and then he’ll see the error of his ruthlessness. With that approach Anthony, in a split second, would declare “You’re lying to me and that means you’re a bad, bad person, and I wish you to go take a place in the cornfield!”
I don’t really have an answer for this. I just know it’s a very fitting parallel. We all knew Drumpf fits our image of an aggressively narcissistic toddler. But it’s worse — he’s been handed the tools of governmental power, so far without any effective opposition. So — what can be done? I’d be glad to see some realistic suggestions.
