What Group Are You In? [1]

Before the election some of the key figures in intelligence and defense of the country such as John Bolton, General’s Milley and Kelly who had been in the first Trump administration tried to warn Americans about the dangers he posed to democratic norms and the rule of law.
Trump himself laid it out, and of course there was Project 2025. Even the people who warned us are probably surprised by how quickly it all transpired.
After the election we held on to hope they might be wrong. That Congress would not abdicate its principles and oath to the Constitution. Why we thought this given they had bent the knee so often speaks to the optimism within the human spirit. I don’t think abandoning optimism is ever warranted. We can maintain it while recognizing the gravity of circumstances we face.
We have been let down by the institutions that were positioned to protect us from someone like this. History of these times, when written, will lay out how this happened. Those who allowed it will be enshrined for their complicity, they will be the villains of the story. The Robert’s Supreme Court, it’s decisions and corruption will be a centerpiece in the origin tale of all this. There is no more obvious culprit than this court, starting with the Citizens United decision and most recently the Executive Immunity case. These will be the bookends for the volumes to be written.
So here we are, enmeshed in an autocratic style government. There will be essentially four approaches to dealing this new situation that I see:
For some it will be business as usual. They don’t really follow politics and are reluctant to think about it. If something is wrong they passively wait for it to go away. Someone will fix it. They always have.
Then there’s the concerned citizen types who are upset about it and attempt to push back in limited ways. They post a lot about their concerns on Social Media, as if being concerned was some form of action.
There are those who like what they are seeing and have no problem with the policies of the autocrat. They bask in their righteous decision to support him and continue to do so no matter what.
Finally there are the activist types who cannot let this situation stand. They wake up everyday compelled to respond anyway they can. They are the people who literally and figuratively fight the fires, go into dangerous circumstances to rescue and care for the injured. These people are the champions for the rest of us.
Which group are you in? What will be your response, not only now but over the long haul, because frankly it’s just getting started. Will you eventually acquiesce because it’s too uncomfortable to think about? Whatever it turns out to be, well that’s just the way it is? If so that’s ok for you maybe, yet remember that future generations will feel that apathy. Some of them will be related to you. I cannot, and have no right to tell you the best course for you.
This is all fresh and I don’t know myself how to respond and resist in an impactful way. I know I must do what’s peaceful, smart and efficient however.
There’s something inside of me that can’t live with injustice. It’s always been there. I am held captive by the urge to resolve it. It is my Albatross and my reason for being. I must answer the call.
