Photo Diary: My Houseplants [1]

OK, I admit it---I have a terrible brown thumb. Generally, any plant that is in my care has a fairly high chance of eventually turning brown, curling up, and going off to that great greenhouse in the sky. Not out of malice, but of benign neglect—I often get distracted by other things and go long periods without watering the poor little dudes. And the only heater and AC I have in my mobile home is in my bedroom—which is not where the houseplants are. So when it comes to Florida winters and summers, the poor little things are on their own.

Remarkably, though, the plants that I have now, since I gave up van-traveling and settled down, have been doing pretty well. They’ve been putting out new leaves regularly, and the Tillandsia have actually begun putting out flower buds, which I can only assume means they are pretty happy with things.

I still forget to water them for long stretches, usually until I happen to walk by and see them wilting. But all in all they seem to be tolerating me pretty well and adapting to the situation which they have been (involuntarily) put into.

Some photos.

My houseplants

This Nephthytis was with me for years while I was traveling around the country in a campervan. It lived in a little pot in my console cupholder.

Pothos

I’ve forgotten exactly what this one is, but IIRC it’s some kind of Dracaena

Maranta Prayer Plant

Rex Begonia

Tillandsia Air Plants
