CPAC liars: arbitrary, capricious, and 'bad dads' [1]

Global right-wing propaganda show at CPAC.

President Donald Trump keeps lying not only about the 2020 election he lost but the 2024 election he won. In a Saturday speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump correctly noted that he earned 77 million votes in 2024 — then falsely said his vote total was “actually much more than that,” since unspecified people “cheated like hell.” There’s no basis for this claim. Trump’s official vote total is his actual vote total, and there is no evidence of unsuccessful cheating by vote counters or by his Democratic foes. Trump made the claim less than two weeks after he baselessly cast doubt upon the legitimacy of the vote total of his 2024 opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who received more than 75 million votes. Trump made various other false claims at CPAC, most of which have been debunked before. www.cnn.com/...

This situation should present a fundamental crisis in conservative moral reasoning. Traditional strict father morality requires big, strong Republican men to declare their subordination to Trump as their father figure. This worldview demands absolute obedience and allows no challenge to authority. As Dr. George Lakoff has shown, this moral hierarchy explains almost everything about the Republican Party, including their obsession with punishing those on lower rungs and the twisted alliance between the GOP's fundamentalist base and tech authoritarians. But if Elon is running the show, who is the real daddy? A central premise of Strict Father thinking is that there can only be one ruler in each house, country, or moral universe. Trump used to command attention by merely entering a room. Now, he needs dual interviews with Musk to capture public interest. What kind of strict father figure willingly surrenders his power as a more ambitious man steals it? Two scenarios emerge, both deeply troubling for conservative moral order: Either Trump is simply a puppet under the control of a billionaire puppet master, or he has willingly delegated the presidency to a foreign-born billionaire – who is legally ineligible for the job – so that he can play golf and post on social media all day. www.theframelab.org/...
