A lot of songs are about going places, or about the places themselves, or involve metaphors about going places (I don’t want to narrow down the theme for y’all). So tonight, let’s play the songs that remind us of road trips past, or trips we plan to make someday, or places we dream of. Or anything else you come up with—the music police ain’t writing any tickets tonight….
First up, a tune that’s not my jam, but Mom had a huge crush on this dude back in the day, so I grew up with his music.
Ricky Nelson :: Travelin’ Man
Next up is proof that the boundaries of tonight’s theme are very loose. Despite the last word in the song’s title, there is very nothing in the song itself about traveling there. I’ve just loved this song since freshman year of college, a time and place it always takes me—and nostalgia is definitely a form of travel.
R.E.M. :: Radio Free Europe
Finally, the ultimate road trip tune (sorry, Billie Joe and Bobby Sue)—recorded live, as it should be, forever and always.
