A couple of weeks ago, I had to travel to a mall and walked past one of my favorite restaurants as I changed from bus to train; a greasy spoon underneath a Red Line stop in Chicago. I had no plans of going into the place; even if I had wanted to do so, it would have been closed.

Well...and then there’s the above sign indicating that the place was shut down by the City of Chicago.

And I doubt that it’s coming back.

It was a great place to get a cheap breakfast or lunch that was well prepared. Most often, I would get the breakfast because the place served grits. I love grits and the cashier (whom I assumed to be a previous owner’s son) know that I liked lots of butter on them. While I ordered a few items off of their lunch menu, I tended to stick with the BLT club with crispy bacon, fresh lettuce and tomatoes. and a bunch of fries with one of those hideous small paper cups of cole slaw that one finds so often in a joint like this.

It was primarily a take-out place most frequented by Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) workers who wanted a quick bite to eat but you could catch all types of people in there. For the most part, I dined at one of the few tables that they had and would frequently order something else to go.

I’m actually of two minds about this place closing down, probably for good.

Until a few years ago, the place was a classic and small Greek diner.

At some point, my guess would be that the old owners sold the place, because I haven’t seen them in there.

One good thing that the new owners did was keeping (for the most part) the same menu and the same cooks; the taste of the food never changed, fortunately.

It was the ambience of the place that changed with the new ownership.

The new owners used a small section of the diner to hawk other products, food and non-food. The put a couple of game machines in the place. They even had a spot where one could get a tarot card reading.

It ruined the entire vibe of the place, even as the food remained the same. (When I attend a restaurant regularly, I can always tell when they change cooks.)

I really did not like to go there as much.

I’m going to miss ol’ Pete’s Grill. But I am not surprised that it closed down, either.

It was a perfect greasy spoon under the old owners. The formula for it being a successful place was perfect. Until it wasn’t.
