Oberführer Bannon and the New World Order
A picture can be deceiving. That 1/1000th of a second captured in a still image can fail to tell the full story. That’s why, when I saw the latest CPAC story about Bannon, I made a point to watch the full video clip. In my eyes, it’s utterly damning.
His salute came at the rhetorical climax of his speech—precisely the moment when his words and actions were most significant. Even more troubling was his choice of words at that moment, chanting “Fight! Fight! Fight!” as he raised his arm in salute. In German, “fight” translates to “Kampf,” unmistakably echoing Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler’s manifesto of Nazi ideology. It’s unreasonable to dismiss this as mere coincidence.
Predictably, the right will argue that he was merely echoing Trump’s mumblings after the Butler assassination attempt. But Bannon—whose platform has consistently amplified antisemitic rhetoric—is far too sophisticated a media operator not to understand the implications of his words and gestures. He knew exactly the message he was sending.
I haven’t watched many of Bannon’s speeches, but this one left a distinct impression. It seemed to me that he realized he’d gone too far. As his speech wound down, he launched into an exaggerated series of gestures—fist clenches, left-handed salutes, and other theatrics. To me, it looked like a calculated attempt to muddy the waters and dilute the impact of his initial gesture.
