Mexico is inspecting every small vehicle at some border crossings to US: Huge Delays [1]

I’m writing this update from the Tecate border crossing between Mexico and California. It’s widely known as a sleepy border crossing in the mountains, and they just waived me through here when I entered Mexico. After an hour, I’m still waiting in line over a mile from the border crossing now, and I got here around 9am. (Trucks have a different line).
A couple weeks ago, I crossed at Lukeville, another sleepy border crossing in Arizona. I was surprised to find a long line, since I also got to the border early. The delay was entirely due to the Mexican military inspecting every single vehicle, thoroughly, asking me to step out of my small car, while they searched my luggage and used mirrors to inspect the undercarriage. Judging by the wait times online, these incidents are not isolated.
I’m visiting Mexican world heritage sites this month, like El Pinacate. And I’m not too busy otherwise, so I don’t really care. I figured something like this might happen, so I charged my car fully and left early.
But this nonsense is affecting a lot of people who have jobs and work that crosses the border frequently. Obviously it’s expensive for Mexico to conduct these inspections, and it will cost their economy greatly. But many of the cars in line have US plates, and doubtless many voted for Tramp. Texas Governor Abbott doubled inspections of trucks a couple years ago, which cost the US economy $9 billion dollars, with Texas losing $477 million per day until he backtracked.
The longer this goes on, the more trade is lost. And the more people hate the current administration. Previously, the US had a lot of goodwill around the world, and folks would try to do business with us, despite the logistical challenges. Some would send their bright kids to our universities, further increasing trade opportunities. The economic cost of destroying that goodwill is incalculable, and it diminishes us as a nation.
