Yes, that photo is what it appears to be: Steve Bannon, during his speech to CPAC yesterday, gave what can only be described as the Nazi salute.
While, as of this moment, the story hasn’t appeared in the NYT or WaPo, MSN is now carrying it and mincing no words: Steve Bannon gives Nazi salute during MAGA speech:
It was at this point that Bannon extended his right arm in a clear Nazi salute while trying to conceal a smirk on his face as he did so. As he did the salute, the audience could be heard cheering him on. . . . Bannon's salute was more obvious than Musk's, who had pumped his chest and twice waved his arm in the air. Instead, Bannon held his arm straight out and kept it there for a few seconds.
Newsweek’s version, which is several hours older, is less straightforward: Steve Bannon Accused of Making 'Nazi Salute' During CPAC Speech.
Yahoo News did a little better in its story: Steve Bannon Gives Apparent Nazi Salute During CPAC Speech, Mirroring Elon Musk:
If once is a mistake and twice is a coincidence, then on Thursday Republicans got this much closer to a pattern when, at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), former Donald Trump adviser and convicted felon Steve Bannon made a gesture that is identical to a Nazi salute.
I actually found it first in La Repubblica, a center-left news site that I’m using right now to practice Italian. That paper didn’t mince words: Bardella annulla il discorso a Washington dopo il gesto nazista di Bannon [Bardella cancels his speech in Washington after Bannon’s Nazi gesture]. Bardella, along with Marine LePen, leads the French rightist party, the RN (Rassemblement national, or National Rally). EuroNews, via MSN: Jordan Bardella drops out of conservative US event after speaker gives Hitler salute:
Bardella had been due to address the conference on links between the US and France and the momentum gathering behind "patriotic parties" in Europe. But in a statement issued on Friday, he explicitly identified the reason for his decision to pull out of the event. "At the podium yesterday, when I was not present in the room, one of the speakers provocatively made a gesture referring to Nazi ideology," he explained, saying that he pulled out "immediately" after Bannon's actions were brought to his attention.
Other European papers have reported on this, including The Independent, The London Economic, The Telegraph, and Le Monde. It also being carried in The New Republic, Axios, and The Daily Beast.
The rats aren’t leaving the ship; they’re taking it over.
