Thursday GNR: Resisting without Hating [1]

The maladministration’s meshugas and incompetence is steadily increasing. How should we take that? Well, we have to push back, of course, in the courts, in the streets…But do we have to get upset about it? Well, a lot of people say No, we don’t, and a lot of them have training methods for that. Buddhist meditation is thousands of years old, and much more recently we have had Quaker pacifism, Methodist resistance to enslaving people, Tolstoy, Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience, Gandhian non-violence, and MLK.
Some say we should get upset, even permanently angry, or even that we should hate the deluded MAGAites, the Broligarchy, and so on. But hatred hurts the hater more than the hated. Besides, ignorance and delusions are well understood disabilities, and we must enable the disabled to lead normal lives wherever we can. And if not them, certainly their children, who are falling away from the delusions and hatreds in droves. Talk to them. Welcome them to reality.

Leo Tolstoy's life has been devoted to replacing the method of violence for removing tyranny or securing reform by the method of nonresistance to evil. He would meet hatred expressed in violence by love expressed in selfsuffering. He admits of no exception to whittle down this great and divine law of love. He applies it to all the problems that trouble mankind.

NASA’s latest estimate is a 1.5% chance of an impact. I’m rooting for the closest possible flyby getting caught on numerous cameras plunging into and out of the atmosphere. Then, of course, it will end up in a whole different orbit. If it does impact, it will most likely be at sea, with only a tsunami to show for it, not a vast crater and planet-girdling dust clouds. We will know much better how much of a problem we have with lots of further observation, including from JWST.
