Can we get R Congresscritters to switch parties? [1]

This idea began as a comment here. I’m writing this short diary in the hopes that the idea can spread. I haven’t seen Indivisible, or any other group consider or suggest an action of this nature, but I have to believe there are two or three vulnerable Republican congresspeople (assuming we still have a functioning democracy, which admittedly is a large bet) that, for all of their conservative “ideals,” are not on board with full-on fascism.

Just one house R declaring independence and caucusing with the Dems would be an earthquake. Two would be a tsunami. Three would effectively throw a wrench in the works. Is it crazy? Perhaps. But with all the pressure being put on Congresspeople at the moment, it would be a good action, and it would FEEL GOOD, if blue people in purple districts called their congressperson every day with appropriate outrage… and a suggestion: “Switch parties.” “Are you really onboard with the destruction of the American experiment?” “You want a King?” “Have you read your Old Testament and what happened to the Israelites when they got the King they asked God for?” “You don’t have to become a Democrat, you can become an independent and caucus with the Dems.” “Where is your patriotism, and where are your values?”

Indivisible had some other great suggestions in The Nation, such as Democrats traveling to districts where the Republicans are not holding constituent meetings. But why depend on our Reps doing this? If R congresscritters aren’t holding town halls in their own districts, residents can organize their own and put up an empty chair, then yell at it like Clint Eastwood. Invite media to cover the overflowing town hall and the empty chair.

I live in California, with a blue congressman. But if I had a red one, you can bet I could make a 3-minute call every day, repeatedly suggesting that my congressperson step off the fascist train. It might be the least I could do. Heck, it might even work on a couple of R Senators.
