Resistance [1]

Like most people here, I have been disgusted by the turn our country has taken over the last decade, but particularly in the last year. I no longer celebrate the country as it exists. The ideals that we once claimed, though, admittedly, never achieved, are nowhere to be seen in government or much of society today. The bright spots have gotten fewer and farther between.

The jingoistic performances by the right turn my stomach. I can’t abide most “patriotic” acts today because they have been appropriated by the evil, the stupid, and the larcenous to whip the unthinking into a frenzy of hatred, fear, and smugness.

I’ve been looking for a way to kindle positive feelings of community among those of us fighting against the baser instincts of those on the Right while letting them know that we will “not go gentle into that good night.” I think one way to do so would be to resurrect the anthem of resistance used by one of our oldest sister nations from the era when we both first threw off our respective yokes of monarchy: The Marseillaise.

I believe that this song could be a way to resurrect the spirit of resistance and brother/sisterhood among people of good will in this country, as well as (perhaps) give us a way to advertise to the rest of the world, particularly in Europe, the fact that Republicans don’t speak for all of us. Any American song will stir the hearts on the right to the illegitimate patriotism of Limbaugh, Trump, and Musk. We need the history of this song, one many Americans recognize, and one that’s untouched by the rhetoric of the Right Wing.

Being able to mount a chorus of citizens in opposition to the braying of Republican voices would be a positive development for our counter movement. I invite anybody who’s interested to learn the song and use it disruptively at any appropriate opportunity: flash mobs at Republican events, Tik Tok videos, maybe even at Rump golf courses whenever Our Supreme Embarrassment is putting . . . Use your imagination.

Here’s a video to get started learning the words, if you don’t already know them, as well as what is in my opinion the most moving scene from the greatest movie of all time.
