Evening Shade -- Resistance Rising -- Wednesday [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']
Date: 2025-02-19
WELCOME TO THE EVENING SHADE A SANCTUARY OF SANITY AFTER A LONG HARD DAY OF FIGHTING FACISM YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS (Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE) AND EVEN MORE CRITTERS
THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS EVERY PERSON WHO COMMENTS WILL GET A CRITTER RULES IN THE DIARY WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY === Hello everyone and welcome to my first time hosting the Evening Shade. I will be writing on Wednesdays from here on, except for next week when I’ll be visiting friends and family. (If anyone would like a chance to host without making a weekly commitment, this would be a great opportunity to write on 2/26. I’ll be back on 3/5.) All of us here value this space, but it has become overwhelming for one person to dive into the news every day, so we have decided it takes a village to write and herd critters for the Shade. We are seeking several volunteers to help. Although Girasol and I have decided to grab a day a week, you are free to choose a day here or there to give our Nanny Ogg a breather. We’d be delighted with any and all help you can provide! Excellent at finding amazing critter pictures and videos? Become a herder!! Like to write and enjoy summarizing events of the day? Take a turn at hosting!! At first, I was nervous to do this, but Nanny has given me many pointers and I hope I will get better with time. It’s an honor to be a part of this resistance. I’ve been visiting the Shade since the days of the inimitable hpg, and when I decided to create an account, I timidly posted comments and was welcomed by those now known as “the morning people”. Due to my schedule, I’m not able to join in when the Shade drops, so I catch up the next morning. Some of you may know me, but some of you may never have heard of me. I'm sorry I won't be around to welcome you all here tonight, but I'll be here in the morning. 😁 === Matt Kerbel | Substack From Matt Kerbel of Wolves and Sheep There are very few laws in politics, but there are a lot of constants. At this moment, when Elon Musk is illegally smashing government agencies and things are moving at an insane pace, it’s easy to feel like normal rules no longer apply. They still do. Trump’s frenetic crime spree has not repealed or replaced the fundamental elements of politics, even though everything right now feels upside-down. Trump has been ignoring several political forces as he moves quickly to establish his illegal dominance over government. These forces will take some time to make themselves known, but their presence in the weeks and months ahead will be a good barometer of how much regular politics can constrain the would-be authoritarian, even when his party and institutional guardrails will not. Unless Trump is able to overturn the constitutional system—and the pushback we’ve seen over the past two weeks suggests that will not be easy to do—he will eventually run into situational obstacles as well as obstacles of his own creation. Specifically, it is a tenet of political physics that: Trump is a lame duck
Overreaching causes political damage
Ignoring core campaign promises is politically costly
Public opinion constrains presidents, and public opinion goes down ✂ === It's time for a refresher course and besides, I can never get too much Schoolhouse Rock! f'elon probably never saw these. The felon probably slept through them. x x YouTube Video === DOGE is the worst, so it’s always a treat to see some shade thrown at the baddies. wagingnonviolence.org/…
This week, word got out that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, was looking to hire
“world-class talent to work long hours identifying/eliminating waste, fraud and abuse.”
It turns out that people had a lot of ideas about who should apply for those jobs.
Elon Musk and his team of 19-24 year old tech minions have been bulldozing through federal agencies, hacking into sensitive data, shutting down USAID, threatening federal workers with termination, and a host of other illegal and questionable activities. Protests against Musk and DOGE erupted in cities nationwide.
Now, the hiring site join.doge.gov has become a focal point for the outrage as people submit mock applications.
Hitler, Mussolini and Franco all “submitted” applications. One comment quipped “There’s a lot of out-of-work fascists since WWII.” Under qualifications, their applications mentioned things like “good at getting rid of bureaucratic red tape” and “leader in downsizing populations.”
Cruella De Vil (using the email
[email protected]) let Musk know that she has experience in breaking up Black/white relationships, views DOG(E)s as part of her brand, and has conducted round-ups before. Ebenezer Scrooge, though ineligible for being a British citizen, nonetheless lauded his world-famous “penny-pinching” and “ruthless cost-saving measures” and “willingness to work on holidays.” The Grinch wrote, “I stole Christmas. What more do you need?”
At one point, the website threw up blocks to prevent online attacks. It’s back now (in case you were wondering).

x For someone who is supposed to be in charge of government efficiency, Musk sure spent a lot of time tweeting at me todayI take it as a sign that our work to hold him accountable is paying off—& as encouragement to do more!I discussed @insidewithpsaki.msnbc.com👇 www.msnbc.com/inside-with-...

It really does feel like it’s just a matter of time before the law catches up with the felon and the horrible f’elon too. It can’t come soon enough.
x The White House said Monday that Elon Musk is not an employee of the Department of Government Efficiency and doesn’t lead the agency, instead solely serving as a senior advisor to President Donald Trump. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

This is going to be hard to argue. According to Heather Cox Richardson, heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/…
✂
Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the case, had noted: "This is essentially a private citizen directing an organization that's not a federal agency that has access to the entire workings of the federal government to hire, fire, slash contracts, terminate programs, all without any congressional oversight." Now the Trump administration is attempting to protect Musk by saying he is simply an advisor.
Department of Justice lawyer Joshua Gardner told Chutkan that he could not independently confirm the firings of thousands of federal employees last week, prompting her to note that his ignorance seemed willful: "The firing of thousands of federal employees is not a small thing,” she said. “You haven't been able to learn if that's true?"
Peter Charalambous of ABC News noted that lawyers from the Department of Justice are also unable to explain what, exactly, DOGE is. They won’t say it’s an “agency,” which, as U.S. District Judge John Bates wrote, would be “subject to the Freedom of Information Act, the Privacy Act and the Administrative Procedures Act.” On Friday, Charalambous points out, when reporters asked senior advisor to the Treasury Department’s general counsel Christopher Healy, who runs DOGE, he answered: “I don’t know the answer to that.” ✂
x Yep, DOGE is as incompetent as everyone thought. An $8 million "saving" has been listed as an $8 BILLION saving. That is 14.5% of their total claimed $55 billion in "savings" having been completely made up.

More nonsense from DOGE
x I'd rather continue to fund the banking police (who have returned billions to consumers) rather than giving everyone a check for $2.15

Today is International Copernicus Day
And I found a cat named Copernicus!
And International Tug-Of-War Day
Yikes! Maybe we should just skip this since we already have nazi Rs in a tug of war with our allies.
Here’s a brain cleanse from THAT thought:
And National Chocolate Mint Day!
I grow this and it’s amazing.
Please note chocolate and mint are toxic to cats and dogs. We don’t have a live in cat or dog anymore, but our grand dogs visit us frequently and they’ve never shown the least interest in the chocolate mint growing near the patio.
Tomorrow is National Cherry Pie Day and National Love Your Pet Day!
