Voters Who Wanted Change Certainly Got It [1]

Joe Biden faced a discontented electorate. Voters wanted change. Electing Harris seemed to offer more of the same, which would not satisfy the need for change. As a result, we got Trump.

Trump offers real change. Whereas the actions of Biden or Harris would be taken within the constraints of the rule of law and the traditions of the office, Trump, clinging to his grant of immunity from his hand-picked Supreme Court, and the completely subservient Republicans in Congress, is completely freed from the restraints of law. He can now reform the government into something else.

The divisions in the country have led to a government that is incapable of functioning for the people. The imbalance that gives small state voters disproportionate power, coupled with the role of big money, results in a small portion of the population able to completely stymie any attempt by Democrats to enact many popular measures. In 2024, discontented Democrats saw that playing by the rules meant more years where a government could not accomplish the reforms that they demanded.

Presidents of both stripe saw that the only time that any meaningful legislation could be passed was in the first few months of a presidential term. After that, the government is set on its course for the next three plus years.

Something needed to change. Trump, vowing to be a Dictator on day one was certainly a promise of change.

As Jefferson wrote to Madison, “I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.” It is the unwillingness of Democrats to recognize the wisdom of Jefferson, offering stability and a status quo, when the times demanded “a little rebellion” that resulted in this Trump term.

I hope that the ashes that remain of the country after Trump and his cronies have destroyed what has been built over the last 249 years can be reformed into a country where the government can work for the majority, instead of answering to the few. At the very least, the current rule breaking can form a precedent for Democrats to take necessary action to make government work for the majority of Americans.

It is easier for the Republicans to destroy than for the Democrats to rebuild, but often it is necessary for some destruction to clear the path for a new, better structure.
