Trump is the living embodiment of what Dostoyevsky described when he wrote:

“The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices…”

It’s naive to expect politicians to always tell the truth, but lying used to carry consequences—sometimes even impeachment. Not anymore. I knew things had changed in 2017 when, as one of his first acts as president, Trump spewed easily disprovable lies about the size of his inauguration crowd. It was a flashing warning sign: we were entering a reality where “truth” was whatever fed his emotional needs, and “lie” was anything that made him feel threatened.

Since then, the country has largely normalized his relentless, all-encompassing dishonesty—a pattern that is central to his success. That normalization is something we must resist, starting now.

Many writers dissect individual Trump lies, but too often they fail to place them in the broader context of his habitual deception. My proposal is simple: whenever writing about one of his falsehoods, frame it as yet another lie. Every time. Make it a matter of style. If we consistently reinforce that Trump is lying again, we can help restore a rightful sense of outrage.

This isn’t about proving that Trump lies. Anyone we have any chance of reaching already knows that. It’s about making them care that he is lying to them. Changing attitudes won’t happen overnight, but as the consequences of his actions begin to hurt even his supporters, their feelings about his lies may shift.
