Some of my nightly pills.

Pills Galore

Most of my life I’ve taken a statin pill every day, after being diagnosed with high cholesterol in my 20s. Now in my 80s the number of prescribed medicines seems to be increasing exponentially. A few antibiotics have been needed for specific problems, but lately it seems like every complaint requires a new pill to be added to my daily intake to stave off some possible threat.

The number of prescriptions dispensed in the U.S. has increased between 2009 and 2022. In 2009 the number of prescriptions dispensed was near 3.95 billion, while in 2022 the number of prescriptions dispensed was around 6.7 billion. The increase in the number of prescriptions dispensed has a multifactorial origin that includes health care sources, health insurance, and prescription drug benefits.

Two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries have two or more chronic conditions, and almost half take five or more medications. Over a year, almost 20 percent take 10 or more drugs or supplements.

I have long watched the ratio between drug and auto ads on TV. It has been leaning more and more to drug ads; “if you have these symptoms, tell your doctor about our drug” (side effects may include rashes or death).

Then there’s supplements. Dietary supplements — vitamins, minerals, botanicals and probiotics — are more popular than ever. More than three-quarters of Americans take at least one, according to the Food and Drug Administration. As many as 100,000 different supplement products are sold in stores and online in the U.S., the FDA estimates. They range from multivitamins to herbs. Also phony pills to make one smarter. Bottom line for the U S A, it seems that these are the most prevalent:

It was recommended here on DKos to watch a substack by Malcolm Nance. I re-recommend it to y’all to read and pass on. It’s long, but vital. Don’t watch before bed. He is brilliant, and a Kossack as well.
