L et’s enjoy Another Saturday Night of melodious music, magical memories and much, much more as we kick off another evening with music dedicated to alternate versions of the songs we love (and perhaps even hate).
Call it what you will – cover version or copy – these alternatives to well-known and/or popular versions come about in various ways.
Roy Orbison, this song’s co-writer, had an international hit with “Blue Bayou” in 1963, but as time marches on more and more people remember Linda Ronstadt’s 1977 version rather than the original.
Laura Nyro wrote and then recorded “Eli’s Coming” in 1967 and it became a Three Dog Night hit two years later. Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King’s and Gerry Goffin’s “Up on the Roof.”
Nyro also wrote songs that became hits for The Fifth Dimension (Wedding Bell Blues), Blood, Sweat & Tears (And When I Die) and Barbra Streisand (Stoney End).
And there’s this performance of Brewer & Shipley’s 1971 hit “One Toke Over the Line,” performed in 1971 by Gail Farrell and Dick Dale on The Lawrence Welk Show.
Gentle reminder: Please continue to put the name of your selection in your comment along with your song. Those of us on our phones appreciate it, and people using screen readers need this to identify the video.
You know how this works — Put your coins in the slot and your song in the comments. This is your Saturday night jukebox and the party starts NOW~!
