Street Prophets Friday: Great Sugar Loaf (open thread) [1]

Greetings and welcome to Marko's Fuzzy-headed Friday Fluff Fest! Perhaps I should just wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day.

More photos from Ireland this week to kick things off.

Great Sugar Loaf

Near Dublin there's an iconic hill known as Great Sugar Loaf. It's regularly sloping sides supposedly resemble the bulky, conical shape that sugar used to be pressed into before the sugar cube was invented. A dark time indeed. In reality, the hill is far too low and the slopes far too gentle to look anything like a sugar loaf, but you try telling the Irish that.

On the day we visited, the entire top of the hill was shrouded in fog so our tour group separated into two groups. Half of us tackled the trail to the top, while the other half took a winding path around the side. Mrs the Werelynx and I opted for the side route.

It was a lovely hike through the gorse and heather. Our break for lunch was a bit prickly. It wasn't easy to find a spot to sit that wasn't at least partly covered in gorse. Eventually we took a side trial down that cut through a tall patch of gorse and ended on a quiet residential street in Kilmacanogue. We walked down to the main road toward our rendezvous with the bus. Of course, we had a bit of extra time for a little detour …

Saint Mochonog's Church

Built around 1850, this little stone church is dedicated to Saint Mochonog (Cynog)— a Welsh saint who lived in the 5th century and enjoys a bewildering number of variations in the spelling of his name.

A neat little rock garden lines the path up to a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary

Thanks for stopping by. We've gotten a bit of snow here since Wednesday. Hopefully I'll take a few snapshots while I'm out and about tomorrow.

This is an open thread.
