So as you know my son and I do Talking Politics with Mom You tube/podcast. BTW, our little channel just broke 400,000 views, which is something in 4 and a half months. Not like the influencers, who do that in half ann hour, but still. I am grateful to all of you for your support.
Lately my son and I have been talking about DEI. Which required me to do some personal re-education. After our first chat, I read up some more on DEI and I have to say what I found out knocked the socks off me.
DEI benefits many groups, but looking strictly at ethnicity — as in, which ethnicity benefits the most? — I was astounded.
In September 2024 Pew Research surveyed people’s attitudes about which ethnicities benefit from DEI. The propaganda is excellent around DEI so we should not be surprised by the results. I basically agreed with it too, except I would have said White women also benefit, which most people did not. Right at the bottom of who benefits? White men. Only 14% of respondents said DEI benefits White men.
Fortunately, the government kept statistics on this.
The actual facts show that the the views reflected in the graph have it completely backwards. The top groups on the chart — Black women and Black men -- belong on the bottom. And the two groups on the bottom — White women and White men — belong on the top.
The greatest beneficiary of DEI programs is White women.
The second greatest beneficiaries? White men.
The second one really surprised me. But it shouldn’t have.
The attached snap references the now-deleted the Department of Labor statistics. White men benefit not just because they are CEOs. White men up and down the economic ladder benefit from DEI — for example, veterans are overwhelmingly white men. JD Vance took advantage of Yale University’s DEI program for veterans (called the Yellow Ribbon program) to get into Yale Law School. He’s actually an example of how DEI is supposed to work — he is the beneficiary of a program to find qualified students who might otherwise be overlooked in the tsunami of applications for a treasured spot at a prestigious school.
I didn’t know any of this, and I consider myself fairly well informed. That suggests to me that the relentless right-wing propaganda worked. And the absence of a coherent, easy to understand, powerful counter-story.
It’s time to reverse the story that White men are the victims of these programs. They benefit plenty from DEI. They will suffer along with all of us from its loss. It’s time someone pointed this out.
Latest episode of Talking Politics with Mom is here FYI.
