Harlem Renaissance (Black History Month) [1]

Here is a short poem about one of my favorite eras in American Black History.

Harlem Renaissance

There was music everywhere

maybe it was jazz

maybe it was the blues

maybe it was the language spoke

like the poetry of Langston Hughes.

Maybe it was the feeling

of not having to pretend

where you could just be you.

It was owning something

all our own

a spot where we were not,

strangers undesirable,

but home –

Harlem Home.
