There Are Literally No Ethics in Politics [1]

The title of this piece may sound like an old saw, but I have always resisted saying or writing it because it is lazy and defeatist. We have entered a new era. I suppose one should not be surprised that the election of a liar and criminal has resulted in lies and criminality. For all the talk of Democrats caught flat-footed by the change in administration, Republicans have proven legless. Not only are Republicans allowing Donald Trump to march America into fascism, but they are also applauding from cowardly stumps. Mr. Trump said yesterday, in what his former lawyer [Michael Cohen] described as veiled “mob boss” speak, he issued a threat to federal judges, saying, “Maybe we have to look at judges.” After a judge stopped his attempts to freeze funds and illegally fire civil servants, former Federal Judge Nancy Gertner stated—as a matter of fact—that his actions are “Very, very illegal.”
Teetering on the tightrope, lower court judges have been the last people, aside from the now powerless Democrats in Congress, to still see the Constitution as sacrosanct. GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson is publicly abdicating the power and purse strings of the lower House, “I will say I agree wholeheartedly with Vice President J.D. Vance, my friend because he’s right [about] what they’re doing in the executive branch. I’ve been asked so many times, ‘Aren’t you uncomfortable with this?’ No, I’m not,” said Johnson. The new Senate Majority leader, John Thune, has been Marcel Marceau in the upper chamber, making the Republican-led Congress little more than a rubber stamp. The Supreme Court cannot rule on the simplest of the most obvious questions of justice—like a president having immunity from committing a crime. Lower court federal judges have become the literal court(s) of last resort.
Looking for a fair investigation from the F.B.I. is now more questionable than its investigations of civil rights leaders in the 1960s—Kash Patel, who may be more corrupt than the famed F.B.I. Director J. Edgar Hoover is on the cusp of running the world's most renowned and influential law enforcement agency. Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin says he has whistleblowers who credibly accused Mr. Patel of directing a purge of the department before his confirmation. There was a time when that sort of blatant flaunting of the law would not only have given Senators on both sides of the aisle significant pause, but a president of conscience would have withdrawn the nomination. We have reached a point, whether through fear, cowardice, or a combination of both, where the GOP, to a man, is crawling behind President Trump like the desperate cybernetic T-101 chasing Sarah Connor in the movie Terminator after having his jewels blown off.

In this scenario, the Democrats—and the people of America—have to save the world like in Terminator 2 and lower the current administration policies into a vat of molten steel or at least a Tesla or two.
