New Group: Infectious Information. [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

This is the inaugural diary for my new group, Infectious Information. It will be a place to collect diaries on all things infectious, both basic educational material and breaking news updates.
Given the precarious state of public health agencies under the Orange Menace, it is my hope that the information itself can be infectious, spread widely to all your contacts, in the hope of promoting self-defense from disease. Knowledge is the best inoculation against misinformation!
Kosmail for an invitation if you want to join and have info to contribute, or follow to find these in your activity stream.
On to the news :
The dairy cows in Nevada who got the D1.1 strain of bird flu have now infected at least one worker. Conjunctivitis was the only symptom, the worker is recovering. No sign of human-to-human spread found. The cows in this outbreak did not have clinical symptoms until after testing found the virus in milk from their farm. So don’t ever count on raw milk being safe because “the cows would be isolated if they were sick”! More herds continue to be infected.
A child in WA died of pertussis (whooping cough) in November. The death was just recently confirmed by the CDC, which warned that cases were higher in 2024 than before the Covid pandemic. The child was under 5 and had gotten some of the vaccines but not the full series.
There is increased spread of dengue serotype 3 in the Americas. The region had record levels in 2024, with 13 million cases over 50 countries and territories. This is more of a threat if you travel than if you remain in the US. Likewise the few cases of clade 1 mpox in the US and other western countries have been linked to travel to Africa, not local spread.
Some wild monkeys in Florida are infected with Herpes B virus, which can be deadly though it is rare. The virus can spread from a bite or scratch, touching a monkey’s skin or body fluids, or the brain, spinal cord or skull of an infected monkey, or by cutting or scratching yourself on a contaminated cage or other sharp surface. They look cute. Stay away from them. Do not feed them, it makes them more aggressive.
The measles outbreak in Texas is up to 24 cases, 22 of them children, 9 of them hospitalized. It started in Gaines County and has spread to Terry County. There is also 1 case in New Mexico just across the border. The affected persons were mostly unvaccinated.
The number of cases in Uganda’s Ebola Sudan outbreak has risen to 9. Only the index case has died.
Just a reminder that H5N1 is not the only avian flu out there. China had a couple of mild human cases of H9N2, there is H5N9 in a flock in California, and H5N5 is spreading in northern Europe.
Product recalls , search these to learn lot numbers and such:
NeilMed Nasogel issued a recall for a batch apparently contaminated with unknown microbes.
TriUnion Seafood recalled Select Tuna for a defect in the pull tops that could allow leakage and growth of botulism.
Oysters harvested 1-10 to 2-4 in Louisiana Area 3 are potentially contaminated with norovirus.
Sweet Cream mini pastries contaminated with salmonella sickened several people. This has been out for a while so unless you bought and put some in the freezer you are probably fine.
