So there’s a story out about House Democrats being pissed about voters telling them to do their jobs:
Why it matters: Members of the Steering and Policy Committee — with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) in the room — on Monday complained activist groups like MoveOn and Indivisible have facilitated thousands of phone calls to members' offices. "People are pissed," a senior House Democrat who was at the meeting said of lawmakers' reaction to the calls.
The Democrat said Jeffries himself is "very frustrated" at the groups, who are trying to stir up a more confrontational opposition to Trump.
A Jeffries spokesperson disputed that characterization and noted to Axios that their office regularly engages with dozens of stakeholder groups, including MoveOn and Indivisible, including as recently as Monday
The Axios article also references a quote from Rep. Don Beyer (D. VA) that his response has been constantly telling people who are calling to also call Republicans as well. We get that party is in the minority and don’t have as much leverage, and yes, voters should also be putting pressure on Republicans, especially ones in swing districts. The GOP has a paper-thin majority and can’t afford to lose votes but House Minority Leader Jeffries needs to get over his frustration and put up a serious fight. U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D. NY) has already received the message:
I asked Senator Chuck Schumer what Americans want from Democrats right now. “They want us to beat Trump and stop this shit,” he told me. “And that’s what we’re doing.” It was a welcome sign of life. For three weeks now, President Trump and the world’s richest man have ransacked from within a democracy that took 250 years to build. The country faces a second crisis: an opposition party that doesn’t seem to know how to respond.
I strongly encourage you to read the rest of Mara Gray’s NYT editorial. I noted recently that Schumer has been changing his tone and approach and Jeffries needs to get on board.
