Top Comments: Getting Involved with The Democrats Edition [1]

So something kind of weird happened last week, my mom got a call and a text from the local Democratic Club in the city just to the south of where we live. The man who called noticed she had been working as a Democratic poll inspector for the last couple years and wanted to know if she was interested in doing more for the Party. What I found weird is I have been working as an inspector since 2017 and had been trying to figure out how to get involved with the Party for even longer yet they never reached out to me. I guess this is just another example of how ineffective the Democrats are or maybe it’s just the local party.

Anyway, my mom asked him if he wanted to speak with me. He said yes, so I took his phone number from my mom’s phone and sent him a text. He replied back asking if I was free today to speak with him on the phone. I replied with the times I would be available to which he replied he would call during the time period. I probably should have given him a different time period to call because we were swamped at work today. Things did calm down but due to a mistake I had to correct, he called at pretty much the worst time for me. Still, I took the call.

The man, Mike, thanked me for reaching out and said the local party was looking to bring in additional commissioners in our area. He explained the job of the commissioners is to collect signatures for the petition drives when candidates are running for election which would begin at the end of February for this year’s elections. I asked if the signatures I would have to get would be from registered Democrats only to which he replied yes. I then asked if I would be provided a list of the registered Democrats in my election district (ED) and would there be a minimum number of signatures I would be required to get knowing likely how few people might qualify to sign outside of my family. He said yes, I would get a list and no, I would just have to do my best and try to get as many as possible.

Also, commissioners are expected to attended meetings or conventions or something a couple of times a year. (Due to my hearing impairment, I do need to clarify this part because I know I did not hear it well.) We discussed the fact that where I live is heavily Republican which I told him I knew very well. I also said I never once had anyone from the Party or a candidate ever knocked on my door which is doing the Party and our candidates an extreme disservice.

He told me the Party likes to have 2 commissioners in each ED and they currently have none in my entire town. (Not a surprise) This would mean I would be guaranteed a spot as a commissioner and whatever benefits that might bring me. (None?) Maybe it will help me get a meeting with my actual Congresswoman when I make appointments in DC. Would be nice. He did ask if I knew of anyone else who would be interested in being a commissioner for my ED, but I am not even sure who is a Democrat since I a reasonably sure everyone on my block is at best a Republican and at worst a fascist.

We will see how it goes as the petition drive begins in a couple of weeks. It was fairly easy when I was doing it to help someone who running for state assembly last year. When even someone who wants to stop being a registered Dem still signs, you know it is easy.
